Reruns of the old Lawrence Welk show run regularly on WLIW21 In NYC on a regular basis. The talent on that show could barely shine the shoes of todays talent. Just goes to prove how much easier it was to accell years ago with minimal talent. |

Sorry to piggy back my posts. I was watching some Lawrence Welk reruns on WLIW21 tonight and noticed the very poor quality of the talent of his singing guests. That is the crux of this thread. Please add any similar that you have seen. |

Sorry but I think Lawrence Welk himself wasn't even that talented and that's coming from a person that has been to his "boy hood" town where he grew up many times over. |

Hmmm.... I remember my Mom liked watching that show. I remember the Lennon Sisters (I think that was their name)... my Mom just loved them! They had that all American apple pie sort of appeal... I remember the bubbles too! I think when I hear many of the old time singers who were supposed to be great... I think they wouldn't be considered great by todays standards... for instance Patsy Cline. *ducks for cover* |

I understand and agree with you about the difference between the singers on the Lawrence Welk show and the stars of today or yesterday. I grew up watching that show during the 50's and 60's. In all fairness to the Welk singers I don't think their talent should be compared to what we consider "stars". The format of the Welk show featured his band, singers and dancers. I don't remember him ever having a "guest" on the show??? All of the performers were Welk employees. Many came and left, probably to seek their fame and fortune, I don't remember any of them that went on to become Grammy winners on their own. A Lot of them released albums but no million sellers. The Welk show was family entertainment not a showcase for the stars. He gave a lot of musicians coast to coast exposure and you're right, they didn't become stars on their own. Pete Fountain is the only one I can remember to achieve lasting success on his own. Good topic Jimmy C !!! Does anyone remember any other Welk performer that achieved solo success? By the way, you can still see the Welk Show live at Branson, MO. |

I worked the "Best of the lawerence welk show " at Knotts berry farm back in the latr 80's. After doing the lights and sound for a whole summer I had most of the songs down. In fact thats where I learned to sing Danny Boy. They had a featured singer/dancer by the name of AnaConi. She was a smokin HOTTIE. It was all good............... |

I forgot about Lynn Anderson, she got a Grammy for "Rose Garden". Big Tiny Little (Dixieland Piano) was on several other TV shows as well. |

I completely disagree with saying there was "no talent" on the show. More so comparing it to today. That is like comparing apples to bananas. Agreed, sound qualtiy and technology wasn't what it is today. How is that a disclaimer on the talent on the show? Some of what I hear called talent today is just noise. There probably is talent, but abused or misplaced. Also, the type music was different, more of a big band/orchestra sound. Each era of music is a stepping stone to the next and they all serve a purpose. A Grammy doesn't necessarily mean talent, either. It is all subjective, depending on what we like at the time. There have been Grammy winners I thought sucked! It is more based on popularity. Lawrence Welk and his crews had talent, though a different type with a different genre of music. I don't see any of us on TV making music for the number of years they did, and still making. Now, getting off my soapbox!
