Have you heard a larger number of bad singers at Karaoke or American Idol? |

Well... since I'm the only one that sings in my shower.. (and I totally rock btw! Best acoustics ever!) And there are some pretty darn good singers at the bowling alley.. (the only karaoke I go to since I don't care for the bar scene anymore).... ding ding ding.... American Idol! Only there can the worst singer get a recording contract... isn't that special? |

Why do I have to be average? Why can't I Just totally suck? your making me laugh out loud, Cindy. Thats such a funny thing to think!! I sing in my shower and Im average ... and I only watch AI during the last month or so when the talent is usually pretty decent .. so I'd have to say Karaoke.... tho even there, I wouldn't say ALOT are really BAD. But .. a few HAVE made my head ---> |

Take it from someone who's achieved your desire. Like everything else, after the novelty has worn off, you come to realize that even being the totally abominable vocalist is over-rated. Invitations to gatherings that were once novel, become repetitious. The appearances at the breach of peace hearings, EPA depositions start to eat at your schedule |

I heard way worse on the UK idol than I have at karaoke, but then, I'm certain they pick out the absolute worst for entertainment value, so its probably not really a fair comparison!! |

I agree with ya Atomic, but I think we also hear worse on AI because those people probably wouldn't get up and sing at karaoke, but HEY... THERE'S AI AND THERE'S TV CAMERAS! WHOO-HOO HERE'S MY CHANCE TO GET ON TV! *hi mom! hi dad! aren't you proud of me? I stink!* |

Keep in mind that on all TV reality shows it is all about the editing. The folks that make American Idol know from three previous seasons of experience what works. People tune in and are sucked in to see the bad singers because, it is entertaining. The Jerry Springer style smack talking also works and they know it. Of course some of these utterly clueless and talentless singers are a riot, in a painful sort of way to watch/hear. But of the thousands upon thousands that show up, I would bet that only a small percentage are truly awful singers, and thus the ones we see on the show. I would think a large portion of them fall into the middle of the pack, not good enough to get to the main show, and not bad enough to make the first few weeks of the "out take" reels. So with all that said, if I take off my cynics hat, in any given evening at a Karaoke bar, yes I see much more good singers to bad singers. I think it's the same on Idol, but that wouldn't be good TV... |

This time around I think some of the bad singers on AI are intentionally singing badly to try to land the next William Hung contract. |

I completely agree! The thing about William Hung is he was SO genuine, so real, and so, well kind of innocent. I sincerely don't think he had clue one on what was going to happen when he walked in front of those judges. But that's the key - he was REAL - he wasn't trying to be bad, he was trying, and I think that shines through and I think that is part of his 15 minutes of fame. OK, OK, OK, the million dollar contract helps... |

The last go around I run the vcr into a system and recorded the 4 finalists. Then actually played them back at a gig They all sounded awesome altho they dont help the singers with efx. I made them sound better. no brag just fact.In our area we have several singers that would blow them away Last sat night a couple of young gals came in totally blew us away .Theyare music majors at UNC here in Greeley. There are singers in every town that would compete very well on AI. But they are honed in on a certain type and I don't trust the whole deal to start with. What I tell people is this When somebody can sing sing on a karaoke system and sound almost as good as the original artist that recorded on a million dollar system then you are listening to talent...And I will say this I have heard alot of good singers doin karaoke. And a few that should go to Memphis...If I wasnt old and decrepid and still was nuts I'd go to Memphis myself. My singers are honest.....And sing from the heart and they are regular honest workin people and not lookin to get rich doin something which we love... AI is a hyped up tv show my gigs are real with real singers...... |

hands down it's been while out at karaoke. there are too many ppl that think they're the cat's meow when it comes to singing. when bad singers are up i tend to take bathroom breaks. i know it's a good karaoke night when i've only gone to the bathroom a handful of times. AI is really nothing like karaoke if you think about it. AI shows you what they want you to see. they pick those bad singers to show on their shows to get ppl to watch. it's marketing, pure and simple. karaoke nights are a different ballgame altogether. just my .02 though |

I heard Bob and Tom one morning on their radio show say that AI is nothing more than glorified karaoke. It is when you think about it! I don't even watch it anymore. There are better things to see if I want to watch TV. |

Post subject: | Re: Karaoke vs American Idol |
I have never seen American Idol so I'm not qualified to say which has worse singers. The karaoke bar I go to is known all over San Diego as having the best singers in town. I went to a place by Disneyland called the Spaghetti Station and the bartender told me the singers are notoriously bad. So I guess it depends on the establishment. Like the saying goes: birds of a feather |
