I have been checking out this site for a couple of weeks and I really want to sub my songs. I think someone told me that most people are using Cool Edit Pro. Maybe it is because I live in West Texas, but I have not been able to find this software around here. I did some searching online and as I understand it, Cool Edit Pro's company (whatever it is) was bought out by Adobe. Adobe has put out a program called Adobe Audition. Now here is my question, or questions rather. First, what software are people using to do their recording on their computers. Where can I actually find the right programs? If it is Cool Edit Pro, is it better to get the Adobe Audition or stick with Cool Edit Pro? Is there anything else I need to be able to record on my computer (outside of a cd burner, which I do have )? Any information that anyone can give me would be really appreciated. Thanks--Mike |

Many of us here are using Audigy which is an open source alternative to the commercial applications (Cool Edit Pro, Adobe Audition, etc). I've subbed a number of songs using this software without any issues. If you do plan to sub with Audigy you'll need to download the LAME encoder (also open source) from the Internet as well. |

Thank you karaokemeister! I will check these programs out and see. I want something easy to work with. I have not had a lot of experience with computer software like this. I am just learning about all of this for music! |

I checked out the sight for Kristal. It looked pretty interesting but it says that Kristal does not support mp3. If you have used this program and been able to sub a song in the singers showcase, what did you do to be able to convert the files to mp3? I am considering downloading the mp3 plugin for nero (the software my computer has for burning cd's) will that work if I use that to convert files from Kristal? Should I find something else? I really appreciate everyone trying to help me get this figured out! |

KRISTAL, like Audicity is freeware, and cannot incoperate a (c) material in the program such as Lame. When using KRISTAL or Audicity you will need an encoder to convert your wav. file to mp3. For that I use dBpowerAMP which is also a freeware. When converting your wav file to mp3 ,make sure your file size go down to just below 3mb; if your membership is a free one. If you choose to use Audicity you will still need Lame. Good luck with your song and if you still have a problem just ask. |

I use both of the softwares. I find KRISTAL to be easier to use and have better DSP fx and you can do multitracking if you have a multi-channel soundcard. |

I see! I am not sure if I have a multi-channel sound card or not. I just bought this computer last week because my old one was so outdated that it took 30 minutes to log onto the internet! I bought it new in 95 and I think it was ready to be laid to rest! This one is a lot better and I know for the most part it has the potential to handle most anything. I am really concerned about learning this because I have been spending a ton of money in studios recording my cd's and this could really help me save some money if I could do my own recording and mixdowns. I guess I need to find out exactly what I have in this computer before I go much farther and if I need to upgrade soundcards etc. do that first. |
