We older farts grew up with the guy. He was an amazing performer, a natural at what he did. I watch Leno, and think, damn is this person contrived, to the point I can't stand watching him. Carson was just relaxing, and naturally good at what he did. After 1992 (I think that was his actual farewell show) I sporadically looked up his name, to see if anything came up, yet it never did. He kept out've the media somehow.
I never knew he was even ill. This is a sad day for the entertainment world. Carson was liked by many

I grew up watching Johnny too! I agree Leno is just not quite as warm. Although.. what's odd is ... I hear Leno is the warmest, most humble... and nicest guy you will ever meet! Johnny was quite the opposite. He was aloof and shy. But Johnny was the best at taking a joke that bombed and making it hilarious! Gawd it's gotta be tough to be a comedian! You either have it or ya don't! He sure had it in spades!

Johnny Carson Invented "Late Night", What a genius. Yes others tried before with some success but Johnny perfected it. Years ago I would often stay up late to watch his show.

The Amazing Karnak, and all of his other characters and his down to earth demeanor.

Who could ever forget his animal segments? You could tell that some of those animals even liked Johnny if they weren't climbing on his head or drinking from his cup or worse.

His fun abuse of Ed Mcmahon was great, And you could tell that both of them were having fun.

Rest In Peace Mr. Carson

totally agree... the man was awesome. I remember being torn watching Arsenio Hall... because as much as I liked A.H., Mr. Carson's show was the best.

McMahon, Carson, and Severinson worked well together. The McMahon Carson ability became quite evident when we were left with a succession of less able host-cohost teams

O'Brian/Richter
Leno/Marsalis
Letterman/Schaefer

Personally, I haven't been able to watch a full late night talk show since Carson's last show. I don't enjoy the others. Letterman I do like, yet I just lost interest in late night talk shows. Carson was so easy, and relaxing to watch. He was polished. The others are kids IMHO, rough around the edges.

The Jack Hanna shows were funny, Especially when one of the animals had an unexpected reaction, and Carson's eyes practically would pop out've his head.

The classic I won't forget is the Carson & McMahon rendition of "the twelve days of Christmas" They'd exchange verses

"On the first day of Christmas my ex-wife took from me, the condo in Waikiki"

When Carson and Letterman had Wapner mediate the episode regarding Lettermans truck getting towed by Carson. I was hysterical

Johnny had a way of letting us all laugh at him.... they were just showing some clips of the show.. in one segment he is interviewing a little kid and he did a coin trick for the kid where he takes the coin in his hand and then makes it disapear... then he pulled the coin out of the kids ear. The kid looks at him in disbelief and says "how do you REALLY make it disappear?" and Johnny gives him 'the look' and replied "ya get married".

Only Johnny could make us laugh with that line... cause we all knew that each of his ex wives had taken him to the cleaners.

Ohhh I know Sheree... I saw that tribute to him. How about the little one who didn't know anyone he was mentioning ... and then when he asked "have you ever seen this show" ... and the little sweetie says "well, when I've been puking, I've seen my parents watching it." Johnny's reaction (the master of facial reaction, I call him) was enough to set me howling!!

And that Ed Ames clip ... where he thru the hachett? OMG... I thought I was gonna cry, laughing so hard.

Johnny was the BEST. If ever asked for a "definition" of BEST ... (as in the other thread) ... I think ... JOHNNY CARSON ... would be a great answer!

...one night Carson did a joke and it bombed...so he started swinging his arms lookin around with that grin on his face and suddenly grabbed the boom mike above him pulled it down and said "attention K mart shoppers"...I cracked up....

...for me his funniest line was at Ed when he said "may the bird of paradise fly in your mouth, down your throat, and out your behind...with his beak open"....

...and when he was first on the air...the bit with the hatchet...too too funny...

I will miss Johnny Carson....
