Post subject: | Thank God And Greyhound |
While stationed in Norfolk Va I went tdy to a 2 week school in Vallejo Ca for a 2 week school on a solid state close loop tv system. The airlines was on strike so it was Greyhound all the way across and and all ther way back. The only respite was when I hit Cheyenne I was only a few miles from the farm. On the way back we had a 2 hr layover in Riverside. Thru a little skill and a lot of luck I won a quick $100 on the pool table in a nearby bar. Needless to say I missed my bus. A few hours later I was sitting in a piano lounge listening to a gal banging out ragtime and in walked a short chubby lil black gal with the brightest most beautiful eyes I had ever seen. We locked eyeballs and like it was intended walked straight up to me. I stood up took both her hands in mine and stammered I been lookin for you for a long time. We were both in love and partied hard for the next few hours. She said she would marry me so I took her to the bus depot and bought her a ticket to Norfolk. About 4 in the morning I found myself sitting at her mom's kitchen table who we rudely awakened. With all the courage and respect I could muster I gave her the speech about being in love with her daughter and asked for her hand in marriage. Bless her she sat there withh all the patience in the world listening and smiling. Finally she asked how long have you known her.. Without hesitation I said since 6 oclock last night. next thing we were all laughing so hard we were cryin. She fed us and me and my true went for an early morning walk Sober now we decided maybe the whole thing was a little immature so we parted ways and I went back to Greyhound and went to sleep on a bench. Woke up and glasses were missing so I gave the agent my name and APO Finally caught a bus and back across. A few months later I was sitting aboard ship broke and in mail call got a letter from Greyhound Opened it up and there was a check for over $80 The note inside said a mom and her daughter came in to cash the ticket in and it just so happened the agent who had my address was there. They cashed it and sent my money back.. I cashed it on the base and hit the nearest bar ouside the gate. After drinking about half a budweiser I laid my head on the bar and cried . My faith in all peoples has never waivered since... |
