Post subject:  My Mom's Story

hi all..... sorry if this story bores you, but I'm so proud of my mom for what she's doin' right now that I had to share it with you all.

I have a cousin named Celeste in Halifax NS, who has bone marrow cancer. She's in her late 20's and has 3 kids. She's not expected to live unless she can find a stem-cell donor. They've tested our ENTIRE family.... and trust me... it's HUGE.... probably close to 200 if you count all the cousins, aunts, uncles, neices, nephews, etc....

Out of all those ppl my mom was the only match. So... last week she flew to Nova Scotia to donate her stem-cells. She had to be hooked up to a blood machine for 7 hours on two different days. My mom is anemic AND has an iron difficiency (sp?) which makes this even more of an gift. She's very weak now, but is gaining strength.

The doctors are extremely hopeful. They said this type of donation is very difficult to match, but they did! They've collected millions of stem-cells! Celeste's family is so thankful for my mom, they said they don't even have words to thank her.... My mom doesn't understand what the big deal is. She just thinks it's something she had no choice to do.

Celeste's condition is already improving, but they won't know for sure yet. They'll have to wait a few months to see about rejection, etc... but doctor's are optomistic :D Hopefully, she'll be able to live a long happy life and watch her babies grow up and live theirs.

After the procedure, My mother flew to Newfoundland (where she was born) to visit and relax with her family untill she flies back home.. She's sittin' back... kickin' up her heels and eating lots of Iron-rich foods. Can't wait till she comes back with all the newfie food to share with me!! MMMM!!! And most importantly.... Can't wait to see if Celeste gets to add more years to her happy life.

anyways... just wanted to share this... I'm so proud of her!! :D

Crystal, this is a great story. There is so much bad that goes on in the world and indeed within families. It's really nice to hear a story where family pull together for the good (this is particularly meaningful to me as I come from the most disfunctional family in the world, I am glad they are back in the UK !). It is a great story, thanks for sharing it

Lady Di

PS. Could be in Edmonton beginning of March (weekend Soccer thingy with my son). I will come and find you and sing in your 'boozer'

That's a nice story. I wish the news stations would broadcast more stories such as this, rather than the atrocities that fill the TV broadcasts these days. Would benefit society.

Is a procedure such as this costly in Canada ? Or does your government make even a VERY costly procedure such as this one (here in the USA) affordable to those that need it ?

When you see your mom next give her a extra big hug from KJGREG for being a wonderful person. I lost a dear friend from the same disease years ago and just wish someone could have done the same for her.

OK, I know nothing about the affordability of medical care in Canada. You have a very different setup

Some of the most promising treatments for previously incurable conditions have evolved from stem cell research and replacement. the stem cell, is an undifferintiated critter that can be used by the body and modified to replace damage done when the body does out of sync or cannot produce it's own in sufficient quantities.

Some truly amazing cures have resulted and currently I spoke to somone around the world who has found a cure for lymphatic cancer.

Where there is life, there is hope. And I have a great respect for your mom's courage and love in helping in this way.
