Another style question... Been going to a number of Karaoke gigs around the country for decades. I've experienced several different ways of doing things between singers: 1) No background music and no alternative video. Waiting for the next singer. 2) Background music added with no alternative video, waiting for the next singer. 3) Background music added and an alternative video, but not a video of the music (I've seen cheesy Kung Fu movies used and Beavis & Butthead videos). 4) Music videos used in the transition. =============================== So, what is your style? |

can't answer that... I use all kinds of stuff. Music videos, mix music, comedy bits WHATEVER it will take to change the pace... |

we run out of a small bar so our dead air is very minimal. and i will usually joke or have comments while waiting for the next singer. very few time do i have true dead air. but i am looking into a low volume background during the switch. |

Music only here & then only enough between one singer exiting & the next singer entering. Once they are on stage, it's gone. |

I've got a techno CD that I play between singers just to avoid the dead air. No words, nothing recognizable. Search "trance" for similar music. I still do my patter etc it's just over the music. As the karaoke track ends, I just slide up the volume on the filler. When the next track begins I slide it back down. I don't use regular music for filler because I was running into the whole "Dude--let that song play" thing and it was interrupting the show. |

That's when you get fill music that you have in your books & when they give you that line, you tell them it's in the book & they should feel free to sing it!  I rarely run into that problem though, on occasion someone will ask to let it play, I look over, smile & fade it out for the next singer that is now ready.

I, too, wouldn't call it silence. The time in between songs is filled by announcements or potentially humorous comments, kind of like Billy Crystal at the Oscars. I am the transition piece, and in my three years at this, no one has suggested that I do any different. |

You don't have to do it different. I used to not use music at all & like you, I WAS the transition piece, but I figure 70-80% aren't listening to your announcements anyway, so you may as well put some music underneath. I still make announcements for the bar or upcoming events, but now I do it over a low volume music (almost 10 years). Like when you hear announcements on the radio, most of the time there is some kind of a musical soundtrack behind the announcement. It just adds something. A good test to see how many people are listening when you are making an announcement, right dab in the midst of a regular announcement, say something stupid with a couple of words & go back to the rest of your announcement. You'll get a few heads that will roll around & either think to themselves - He just said WHAT?, or they will kind of smile/chuckle, or (& the most common) they will continue their conversation totally oblivious to what you just said. I also for laughs at 1 show I did, I would play a dance song & then say GIVE IT UP FOR - the people on the floor knew better, but the rest of the crowd clapped like a singer was over. |
