Cindy - myself, Gilly and a few others have discovered we can't say 'RURAL'.
The closest I can get is something like 'errr-al' or 'rahr-al'. Gilly said something about sounding like a 'deranged tiger' when she tries to say it.
HOW DO YOU SAY THAT WORD??? OL

OMG... LMFAO !!!!!!
If you guys only knew how Speech Therapists DESPISE the "r" sound....
there are 3 sounds that use that "letter" ....
R as in Rat
R as in Car
R as in Bird....
Start with the one that sounds like the one in Rat.... then make the "er" sound ... like you'd say in the word moth- er .... than ad ... 'u L" at the end .... like the sound at the end of h ull.
Its a wicked word.... you guys... Have Fun!!
Did I tell you I charge $200.00 hr. .... for private sessions .... !!

Well, I say WURZ-tah-shire or WURZ-tah-sheer
Unless I know that I am trying to annoy someone then it is
"Wurz-tah-ches-ter-shire"
No problem with Rer-rahl
But is it Sked-u-ahl or what? That's for ya Brits!

For a (posh) brit it would be 'SHED-yu-wool'... i think...
That's one of my 'lazy' words, and I say 'SKED-jul' or sometimes 'SKED-yu-wool' depending on my mood.
I think I'm getting the 'rural' thing though... (Gilly) the trick is to kind of 'lift' between the first* two r's (like you're going to use an 'a' sound, but you don't) instead of letting the first two r's collapse into each other which is what I usually do.
*note... i said 'first two r's' because it actually comes out as 3 r's when you say it. (RER-ral - see?? 3 r's... no wonder we're having trouble!!!)

Yep, sort of lift on the second r almost like a second syllable but don't. Comes out like 3 r's with the middle 2 run together.
Funny working where I do in the summer. We get people from all over the world that come and work. Lots of eastern Europeans (Poland, Chech Republic, Russia, Bulgaria, etc) work with people that come from all over the US.
Then mix in the tourist that come from all over the world - especially from Austrailia, Japan, and Western Europe and things get REAL insteresting.
We have a liquor distributor that sold some Austrailian wine to my fiance (she used to manage a store inside the park) from Austrailia that had a beautiful bottle. The thought is to sometimes offer something from 'back home' so they don't feel so homesick. Funny thing is none of it was selling and the Austrailians were laughing and taking pictures of it! Turns out that the pretty bottle was about the quality of Mad Dog 20/20 or Thunderbird! Funny to say the least! At least the Austrailians got a good laugh about it!

Quote: If you guys only knew how Speech Therapists DESPISE the "r" sound....
Oh, I just thought that they hated ME:)
And, it doesn't matter HOW you say it... it is that I simply can't. Lol, i think my speech therapist gave up... and now? I simply go through life avoiding just a few words:) (well, better that than me be elmer fudd:)
Argh.
Anyways, I talk so quickly, no one but those who know me REALLY well have any idea what I am saying..
ANd, I reside in a remote rual area?
It comes out as .. "where is dat wascally wabbit".... when I say it:)
Tongue twister i can say insanely fast.
Betty bought a bit of butter, but the bit of butter Betty bought was bitter. So Betty bought a bit of better butter, to make the bit of bitter butter better.
(Justy can't say any of these) A proper copper coffee pot.
Unique New York.
Which witch wished which wicked wish?
Which wristwatches are Swiss wristwatches?
The sixth sick sheik's sixth sheep's sick.
Lol, ok, but none of those involve the word Rural.. but, i bet I can say ANY of those better than all of ya!

Ahhh... The ever so fun Tongue Twisters, aye? I bet you can say those better than most (I for one, Hate 'em... always mess 'em up!) .....
I Reside in A Remote Rural Area ... isn't a tongue twister, its just a practice phrase that uses all of the different ways to make the /r/ sound.
I do caution you tho .... to be careful of practicing in public ::
One smart fellow, he felt smart!!
This one --- if said in rapid succession 5 times.... usually causes quite a bit of embarrassment
----> your turn --- my turn --- your turn --- my turn
----> what did you just say?
Have fun folks !!

Hmmm only one I have a little trouble with is the 'swiss wristwatches' one. Of course, I probably can't say them REALLY fast or anything.
Rory's rural raft ride really rode rough... *crosses eyes*

My physical address until a few months ago was a mile marker on a highway.
238.2 Parks Highway
We actually have a lot of that still here in Alaska. Not many rural routes but mile markers as addresses.
My parents had a RR address up until about 15 years ago when the post office came out and renumbered everything and put street numbers in. I still remember the RR address they had...
