Hey Phill

I was just thinking (Yeah I know dangerous thing), that while your in a clicking mood(No pun intended about you being in a clique) on the front page, and on our upload page with all these different options, how about adding an option to allow visitors to the site to leave comments ?
Just a thought as I know quiet a few people from other sites im on and also friends that come and listen, tell me they never leave comment coz they cant be bothered going threw all the signing up etc etc, :P
Anyhow just a thought

Interesting idea but it does have some pitfalls. Folks complain NOW about critical comments that are left. If we have an option for 'visitor' comments, people will be able to leave comments completely anonymously and some nasty things are going to be said without any means of retaliation.

I for one, in particular, have certain people online who have determined to make my life hell, and if they find me here (which they certainly can using google on my name) they will start leaving really disgusting anonymous comments on everything I do with no way to prevent them from doing so. At least if a person must become a member to comment, there is a means of tracking them. I think that would be a very dangerous option to integrate.

Just a word of warning...

I can understand the idea of allowing visitors to comment, however there are drawbacks. Hopefully not as extreme as Syber pointed out.

I will investigate and discuss this option with management and provide you with further details.

personally, if someone gets their panties in a wad from a statement made by a passer by or stranger, then they have bigger problems than comments being allowed... but maybe that is just me... people say it is all just for fun but the minute someone maligns them in any conceivable way (sometimes only that person sees a comment as negative) and the whole world is turned upside down... either way it works out, phill, it will work and the space/time continuum will remain intact for most... good work so far on all your projects (including fighting the hackers and nasty bugs floating around the net the last week or so)... it really IS all appreciated... - tig

Tig - you have not seen some of the comments which HAVE ALREADY been left for me by this particular person in other forums and mediums (including Live Journal until I disabled anonymous comments). They go FAR beyond being 'critical'. I would post one here as an example, but they are generally too gross and crude.

This person has done things such as taken our wedding picture from an online album, added pornographic images to it, and reuploaded it with disgusting comments. This person has taken images of friends of mine online, added pornographic images to them along with pictures of me and others in my family, then posted them (along with lots of links advertising the images) with titles such as "See Syberchick lick ***'s &%##!" (and worse).

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who would have problems if this option were added. I realize the intent is completely harmless and meant to encourage folks to visit... but really, how long does it take to create an account? And it's FREE!! There's no reason I can think of that a person who honestly wants to comment and participate couldn't just create an account to do so.

well this particular site has a decent filter system for the vulgar stuff and the mods stay pretty up on most of the forums... plus they respond quickly to remove people or statements that they need to... simply logging IP's of the anonymous visitors and banning those IP's would take some of the steam from them... doesn't mean it will eliminate things like that but, honestly, giving comments like were made to you ANY appearance that they upset ya will only urg ethem on... ignoring things like that can make them go away faster than calling them out... I will put my faith in the moderators on this site to keep things like that from occuring any day... - tig

True, and I haven't had anything from this creep in quite a while, but he's still out there, and he still pops up every so often and does it again (just cause he's bored I guess). I just don't want this site (in particular) to become an outlet for his venom, and for those who are like him.

gee, all you have to do is choose the option not to allow visitors comments surley ?

If that were an option, yes that would be true. I finally had to do that with LiveJournal. I was basing my concern on the fact that most forums which allow 'visitor' comments, do not give a person the option of turning them off.

:?: Just passing through, and saw this post... i simply HAD to enter my 2 cents... (okay, I just like talking to ya'll)

...But what if (maybe this sounds dumb) the visitors didn't really comment on single subs, but could comment on what they liked about the site, or didn't like about the site ( so basically what they as outsiders would like to see that would help them to become a more involved "guest" and perhaps what things would entice them to becoming a commited member of SS or Karaoke scene or whatever)... then it would be like a one-forum deal of "Guestbook" or maybe "Guest Requests" so as to help Phill and others who run the site decide which programs are drawing people in, and which ones need a little bit of work, and be easier to moniter than individual comments on diff subs. Then a visitor, or guest, could not post mean things on people's subs, but just let us know what they liked and didn't like about the website as whole. It could work as a marketing effect for Phill and others and also let us (members) know that, hey, others are really interested in becoming members, heres what they think, yada yada yada...

Does that sound really dumb?? I don't know!
~Manda~ :D

Nope dosent sound dumb to me, your so right, I think the more people that come and visit the site, and they feel like they can get involved a little by leaving a comment on a song they have heard, will make them come back, and like you say may even become a member as well :)

I like the idea behind a visitor comment, but can see how it can be abused.

Maybe, and I realize this would be some weird coding, but have an "email the singer" kinda button. This could be used by anybody that suits the site.

I think it might even lessen the "critical comments" bits that I'm seeing members complain about.

I know when I go to other forums (not karaoke), I like being able to email the person who did the work I'm admiring!

Good Point -

Currently, on the members' profile (SS) you can click the email button, that is if they have permitted it to be displayed. (This is set in the profile page of the forums.) - Email can be used by everyone, it is sent via the site.

I'm trying to figure the code to install the PM function into SS. - The PM function can only be used by registered members.

I'm also working on code to include in SS some of the other features that are performed in the forums (such as: Signature & Smilies)

We'll see... That takes time.

"tell me they never leave comment coz they cant be bothered going threw all the signing up etc etc"

What they are saying is they have little interest. Signing up for membership here is very easy. In fact it doesn't get any easier.
There's an element of truth to the old maxim "you get what you pay for", or "people don't appreciate what's free and comes easily"
Taking one minute to submit a name, and Email address shows at least a little invested interest, some in here are even paying members.
Here's the problem as I see it:

People that are willing to get up in front of a microphone in here and perform, are doing so in an artistic medium, they are exposing a part of themselves, leaving themselves somewhat vulnerable in an already pretty anonymous forum. Feelings can easily be hurt, as to whether or not that should be the case, well that's moot.
Additionally, I don't see what advantages there are, or what reasons would exist giving value to the opinions of people that are in essence too lazy to make a small trip, to watch you perform.
If a person wants candor, or brutal honesty regarding their performances, all they have to do is ask
When you think about it, wouldn't you rather have a strict critique from those that actually have talent and skill and share your interests ?
The fact is, given the anonymity of the internet, many can be quite cruel and nasty. In such an environment, it's quite likely a vocalist will become a target for virtual egg throwing, and not the recipient of the good hearted mature audiences well wishes

Perhaps if a person wants comments regarding their ability from the general listening audience, it would make more sense to mention that in the description of their performance, along with an Email address where they can be contacted.
