Post subject:  Pioneer and other laserdiscs
There is a bar here locally getting rid of their pioneer laserdiscs (among other laserdiscs) and a pair of players (1 of which is broken and needs repair).

Basically, they have about 80 Pioneer Laserdiscs, another 15 English discs (105 total), and 128 more discs that are Chinese, Phillipine, and Japenese. If I buy them all he'll throw in the racks for free and drop the price (which still seems high after he drops it).

What is the going market price for Pioneer Laserdiscs? And others?

Would you consider the discs a 'nice to have', or a 'don't bother - get the songs on CDG/VCD instead' or a 'why haven't you already given him your money?'?

I'm not overly concerned because I'd capture the video and burn it back to VCD's for use on my RSQ (so size is not an issue) or re-encode to DIVX for playback on the computer. A large amount of the tourists we have come through during the summer are from Japan and having the songs might be nice and a good selling feature. But I'm not up to speed on the quality of the laser discs - specifically the foriegn laser discs. The quality of some of the songs on laserdisc is ok - I've seen swipes off a little, etc, but overall the sound seems pretty good even if they do have those campy videos in the background... :roll:

I've seen used Pioneers go for anywhere from $15-$50 per disc. The racks I rarely see used, but the ones I have seen have went for about $100-$125.
I myself really like the original Pioneer series, many good songs & good recordings - true many were recorded at lower volume but that's nothing that a quick kick of the music volume can't fix. Knightshow also really likes these as well. The other brands & foreign language discs I personally wouldn't have any use for.

The other brands I wouldn't pay more than $5-10 for.

I cut my karaoke teeth on the laser disc karaoke, and if nothing else, the videos are a whole lot of fun!

It's like they were made in Asia by someone without a total mastery of the English language! Others look like someone's vacation movies.

They are novel, but if the price is out of line...forget it

I also got into karaoke when LDs where still popular. I have about 50 LDs, most of which are Pioneer. I have nothing but high praise for the Pioneer LDs. The lyrics, key and music are generally right on the money with few exceptions. Most of my Pioneer's have roughly 40 songs (20 per side). And there's not any repeat from disk to disk. Regular customers always asked for the Pioneer LD version of a song 1st, then the Pioneer CDG. I have a couple of other brands, but the quality is nowhere near as good as the Pioneer. I would consider the number of Pioneers in the collection before purchasing. As Lonman said, I have seen the price range for Pioneer between $15 - $50 also.

I have almost the entire set, only missing on a few lds, and I consider them karaoke gold!

My greatest wish is to get them converted to .mpeg or .avi files so I can have them digitally!

Meister, if I were you, I'd get them. If not, you can always sell them on ebay!

In fact, forget I said, it... I'll take 'em! LOL!

You can order BRAND NEW replacement Laserdiscs from two places Ive found:
karaokewow in Acton Ca
and Karaokecenter Palos Verdes Ca

Pioneers go from about 25$ to 50$. I've odered thru both of these and they are prompt and reliable--replaceing damaged laser discs at the place I dj'd at. They have several other brands also. So if you need to replace Pioneer laser discs these are the only two that Ive found that have new original ones in stock. You can also order BRAND NEW Pioneer laser machines from them DVL 888 I think is the model. But theyre QUITE expensive like 800-900$.

I agree with most above. The versions tend to be very good, and most importantly, CONSISTENT. And the video to Leroy Brown makes the whole set worth it. :D

As Kurt said, the biggest downfall is the price of the player, but if you're going to convert them, then it sounds like that isn't a big deal.

But they also play almost ALL formats. Laser, DVD, CDG, CD, CDV, VCD. No super cdg or mp3.s.

Why not convert them using a capturing video card and a software call Pinnacle studio? All you need to do is capture the analogue video thru the RCA out of your player & the audio into one big file (*NTFS Drive) & than just create the chapter with Pinnacle studio which will be your tracks of course: :idea:
This way you'll keep the nice graphic & of course the great sound of these excellent piece of art!!

* The reason I say a NTFS drive is that FAT32 will only capture a max of 4G, your BIG file will be enormous but of course it will be reduce once you're ready to burn on a DVD (4.3G)

And for the two companies that sell the lasers, they don't have the ones I need... they only have a FEW of the lasers!
