Post subject:  ever been absolutely stumped on how to follow-up a singer?

it's craaaaaaaazy rare for this to ever happen to me, but last night, i was absolutely stumped after a particular singer performed. i'm guessing she's performed this one song often and those who've seen it, knew what to expect. last night was our first meeting and her performance blew me and the entire room away--not only singing-wise but theatrics, choreography, timing, attitude, acting, everything. and i've seen a lot of excellent performances.

so i couldn't think of any song to play in-between singers after her performance. is there a 'common' goto song for something like that? anyone else been stumped like that? you don't want your follow-up song to offend the person that just sang by being absolutely ignorant or dismissive of an impeccable performance.

i figured to play a song from a completely different music genre since she totally killed like 3 different musical genres in one performance. but i admitted on the mic i was totally stumped on how to follow up her performance. any help out there or common stories?

i've mentioned this before, but i'll put it out again if it helps anyone:

once i had a pair of young (college-aged), occasional regulars (a guy and a girl) come through and they decided to do a raunchy rap song. the problem was: on that particular night, there was an older, stuffy crowd present and the youngsters didn't realize the rap song they picked actually has the dirty lyrics on the screen. the kids were probably used to the clean radio version. (you kjs will figure out this 90s rap song i'm talking about.) so, they started off and couldn't believe their luck that it had the cuss words in it and shouted each cuss out proudly. but mid-way through the song, they were embarrassed--they could see their song was falling very flat and the crowd of parents and grandparents there didn't appreciate all the cussing, nor the rap music, nor get the joke that this is a silly pair of occasional regulars who enjoy being silly. man, the silence in the room after they finished was so cringe-worthy. without a word, i immediately played an upbeat hand-clapping church gospel song. and it broke the ice in the room--everyone was laughing and then hand-clapping. oddly enough, the pair of kids knew the gospel song and since they still had the mics in hand, led the room with song like we planned to do this. afterwards, the guy thanked me saying he was wondering how he would be able to show his face again after a song like that until i played the gospel.

got the idea from chris rock when he hosted an awards show and marilyn manson performed "beautiful people." right after manson's performance, chris said something like '(everyone needs to) run/go to church right now'. and i liked the way he handled that. as a host he had to follow it up with something--i felt that was the best route to do it with a slight joke though it may not be the truth or accurate, manson is an entertainer and should appreciate that someone (in a kidding way) labeled his performance as too edgy.

and by the way, what song do you follow up with after a bar fight in the room?

that's always stumped me too. i remember a few really sad or disturbing bar fights during karaoke--(normally we get shut down afterwards so there's no song to play, only packing up to do) but a few bar fights where the show had to go on afterwards and i was absolutely clueless on something to play because i was so rattled.

other times, there have been near-fights that got squashed or an unruly person get kicked out and since there was no damage, i'll poke fun by playing 'fight songs' like mosh pit stuff or mma or common wwf battle songs, etc.

Honestly I don't usually cater the filler that much, but after a fight I think I'd like a slow, danceable love ballad to restore a bit more relaxed atmosphere.

I only had one fight while I was hosting myself. I put a mic into a speaker for feedback as soon as I saw them squaring off which stopped everyone in their tracks. Then I played the Barney song. Everyone cracked up including the guys that were squared off. I don't know if it would work if they were on the ground or were girls. This one didn't get that far.

i'm stealing this. great stuff. i stole the "rocky" suggestion too--after i posted this there was a fight at my venue. played rocky after dude was escorted out and everyone laughed. they wanted me to play more rocky songs.
