You have a decent sized crowd, a fairly full rotataion. You cue up the next person's song, call them up, cut the background music, and everybody's ready to listen, then the singer comes up to you and says, "Can I do a diffrent song?" What do YOU do next???????? Comments........................[/u][/i]

I change the song. Turn the fill music up a bit, get the disc & play it. I can take the extra time to do a announcement or to remind people to take care of their bar staff.

I say, "Nope--I've already got it programmed in the machine, you'll have to hit that one next time around."

If it is NOT too busy though, I'd accomodate them.

Switch it - no big deal. To minimize dead air, promote drink specials, tipping the bartenders, upcoming events, etc.

For the most part I will swap the disk like said only takes a few seconds. I have if needed was to take the next singer and have them start then swaped the disk and cued it up for the other. But that has only been a few rare cases.

it ticks me off something fierce, BUT I also realize that these people are paying for me to be there, and in essence are paying me.

I DO try to remind people that it takes time, and I'm very proactive about having the next song ready... and to be courteous to me to tell me in advance.

Hardly ever works, though.

It depends... first they have to be nice about it and not an (@$%&#!)... otherwise they sing what I have in or wait for the next rotation.

If the place is packed:
If they have it on a slip on their stack or know the disc number and track so I can grab it right away I put it on. Provided it wasn't just sung or due up on the next couple singers.

If they or I have to look up the disc/track number then I bring up the next singer, look it up the change and put them up next.

If it's slow I go ahead look it up and play it. I'll do a couple annoucements and run through the upcoming singers while I do that.

I don't mind if they change as long as they do me the courtesy of having a slip filled out/know the disc/track# and aren't trying to 'out do' someone else by repeating a song.

I would promptly ban them from singing the rest of the night. Then I would ask them to write out a ten page report on karaoke sign up rules and then and only then allow them to return. I've only had this happen once and thank god the mgt. agreed with my decision. Its always important that the club backs you up ESPECIALLY with sign up issues... Now lets discuss what happens when one of my singers hits a sour note....

like Meister, i will try to get the disc changed, or i will just skip them and look it up.

Frankly it is RUDE to change your song once you have been called up. So depending on my mood, you may get told off. I hate dead air, and i have the discs pulled for the next 2 singers already

Switch it, in the big scheme of things it's nothing plus you let your audience that you're flexible. Nothing worse than an inflexible person. How many of you at one point in your lives have asked someone to do you a "favour" or bend the rules of some sort. Especially a cop who is about to write you a ticket.

I'll switch it, but while I'm grabbing the new disc I'll usually say something like "This dead air is brought to you by <singer's name>." Unless I have other announcements that I haven't said in a while.

I'm not a KJ so, from the singer's perspective, I agree with karaokemeister: if it can be done real fast - okay. If not then definitely SKIP HIM! The other singers (like me) are patiently waiting their turn and should not be penalized. The "mind changer" is the one who should be penalized by having to wait one more singer. To go even further, if he is skipped, then he stays in that spot in the rotation for the rest of the night.

Just my humble opinion.

After reading this discussion, I think I am gonna take some of the suggestions, because this happens to me ALL THE TIME, so I am going to do the "this dead air is brought to you by <name>, but I am also going to make a DUNCE hat and make that person wear it during the song, Man I hate dead air.

THANK you Lonnie!

And that's what I do when they make me change it... slide the ol' slider bar up and let the background music fill in the "crickets"
