Funny how I've only done three Karaoke parties and I've already lost a microphone. Last weekend I had an office party from my wife's office, which I did for free, since I'm trying to gain experience and I don't believe that I have a big enough selection of music to charge yet. The truth is that I have learned on every experience.

The problem is that I didn't take microphone stands (which I always will from now on) and somebody placed the Shure PG58 on the table and it fell... I mean it just felt on the grass... Now when you connect it you can barely hear anything. I opened the top of the microphone to see if anything looked broken, but everything looks normal. I know that the PG58 is no SM58, but I expected it to be a little tougher...

I not a techie by far but I use 2 PG58 in my shows and the have taken a couple of falls. So far I haven't had any problems with them.

I think the PG58s are fairly rugged as well for the price. I take it you have plugged other mics into that cord and channel and everything else works okay?

Have you considered trying to return it? Perhaps it's defective... Shure makes good mics, even the cheaper line are good.

I contacted Shure to find out if I can get the PG58 repaired. They basically told me to throw it away, because their minimum charge for a microphone repair is $55.00 and the PG58 cost me $59.00. It's a darn shame, because I like Shure products.

I opened the mic and all cables seem to be connected correctly, I imagine that the mic capsule is the one that was damaged. Any ideas? It's a shame, because the mic looks brand new and it just fell on the grass from my table. When I connect it, I only get a very low signal...

On the good side, there were no mic falls this weekend, since I kept the mics on their stands...

For a wired mic, I use both a Gray Radio Shack mic, and a Shure RS-230, also bought at Radio Shack.

They're covered under warrenty there...

The gray one is a damned good mic, but the wires that connect to the mic element are on the side. And if a mic gets nailed, you can open it up and see one of those wires detached! !

Now R.S. has replaced it, but I've finally seen the light, and only use the Shure mic that they sell... I think it's the same thing as the PG-58... just packaged for Rat Shack.
