Post subject:  Runing from contest to contest.

Last night I particpated in the finals of a karaoke contest. I was told by others that they never heard me sing better. I was very confident about my chances of wining.

There was another singer who did equally as well. She like I competes in many contests, both locally and regionally. There are those of us who travel from contest to contest. Often we see the same singers moving in the contest circut.

I've very rarely complained about the judges or their decisions, but last night the fix was so obvious, that I can't help but vent. The winner was a woman who was a "regular". Anyone there could see that the winner should have been someone else. She won because she was a "regular" singer in this venue.

If your going to run a contest and advertise it around so as to increase your bottom line you should not give the prize to a "regular" just because they are a "regular" singer in that venue. If the object is to give a sum of money to a "regular" in appreciation for their continued support, say it up front or just give them the money. Advertise a "regulars" only contest or something so those of us that take our competeing seriously can avoid wasting our time.

I've seen this topic addressed before in this forum. I understand that the reason for runing such a contest is to increase the profits. I also understand that sometimes hard feelings are created when "outsiders" come in scoop up the money and leave for the next competetion. Contests do bring in more singers, especially as the prize money increases. It's foolish to think that these people would continue to hang out after it's over. We are on our way to the next venue to compete again.

I understand both sides of the issue, I just think that the winner should be the best preformer. I'm not upset with the winner, it's not her fault. I'm upset with the whole idea that we, the "outsiders" shouldn't be competeting. A while ago I talked about new rule that sprung up in local contests, that you can't use your own disc, because it's unfair somehow to the other singers. Anyone can buy a CDG, you can even buy them at Walmart. It was a shot fired at the "outsiders", because we can practice and somehow that also is unfair.

Well I have vented and now I feel some better.....I think I'll go practice now.....

Agree - contests are dreadful. Avoid them.

We've had 'impromptu' contests where they weren't announced in advance and winners were picked from that nights singers. Pretty straightforward and since the prize money was low ($50 for male, $50 Female, $50 Duet, $50 overall) and it was mostly regulars it wasn't that big a deal. They tend to do it around Christmas every year. They also give out t-shirts, hats, etc.

But if there is serious money involved I won't do a contest. I don't mind putting the disc in the player, annoucing each singer, but I want nothing to do with the contest. Outside judges, clearly defined categories, and I make it clear I have NOTHING to do with the contest other than technical support and perhaps MC'ing the thing tp EVERYONE.

There is far too many issues with running a contest.... I'll pass.

Once again contests are for desperate clubs and kj's. They reek of the fix and turn normal everyday singers into contests whores. Of course we will hear from that kj that swears by them or that only does them because mgt. makes them do it. Yeah rightttttt.

Contest Whores.......now that's a new one

I suppose that's those of us who move from contest to contest....

I never winn a lot....that doesn't really matter to me.....

But I enjoy the competion....the rush that I get preparing and preforming...

My wife win's quite frequently....never considered a "whore"....

and oh yes there is a little money to be made....not a lot but it paid for our last vacation.....

"Contest Whores" I'll have to think about that one for a while...

Oh well I think I'll go practice a little more....this whore could use a win...

Contest Whores ??????? We may think that But isn't that a little offensive. Considering he was trying to vent his frustration. I Know us Kj's have an opinion, But this board has as many singers only as it does KJ's.

KKid,

I can totally sympathize with you except in the one contest I've competed in the last two summers it's not about a "regular" winning it because no one around here has karaoke on a regular schedule. It's been about where you are from (what town you are from).

This last summer, the first night of the traveling contest that I partake in, I thought I did really well & had numerous strangers come up to me & tell me that I had it won hands down. I had moved & grooved & the crowd reacted to my songs, etc.

Well - they announce the 3rd & 2nd place winners & everyone at my table was kind of surprised at those people - especially the 2nd place one (she hadn't looked up from the screen and basically was bent over the screen & really off key on her two slow songs).

1st place gets announced -- the guy that won has an ok voice and made sure he'd be last on the program & he sang the Toby Keith song, "Angry American" won & I didn't even place. Of course he got major crowd participation (everyone was 3 sheets to the wind by this time - didn't matter that he was glued to the screen and couldn't put down his beer to sing & was screwing up words left and right). I felt bad for the guy though because a room full of strangers to me & friends to him audibly voiced their disagreement with the judges. I just figured I would come back the next week & try again

As it turned out all 3 placers were from the same area town & two of the 3 judges have a thing for that town sports-wise so that means that town rules around here (our area is very sports minded). Comments were made that when people saw who was judging they kinda figured those people would win.

KKid - I have a question for ya.. When you go to these contests - do they have actual judging criteria? That's part of the problem with the contest I'm talking about- there's ZERO criteria. It's held 6 Fridays between June - August in different bars in the same town and 3 semi-finalists are selected each of those nights. In August the finals are held & prize $$ is $500, $300, $100. There are different judges each time & no criteria is given to the judges to use so as a singer ya never know what to do or what those judges are looking for that night so each week ya never know what you're coming into.

My little sis won a karaoke contest last year, and they had 4 outside judges, each giving marks out of 10 on vocals, entertainment factor and overall performance (I think those were the criteria) and whoever got the highest mark won.

She didn't get any prize money tho... the prize was an ultra-tacky little perspex trophy that said "karaoke star"... and she was thrilled with it... LOL!!!

Personally I'd like to see more contests with outside judges, each given the same instructions on what they are to look for, and as for the tacky trophy, I got a couple on the self. I even dust them ocasionally!
