Hey girly. Ya know, I just discovered something the other night that just MIGHT be the root of your problems. I especially thought about it when listening to 'Angel' because (although it was just beautiful, and you know I'm a fan of your voice) you were still having the 'nasal' problem and your words were kind of mumbly. I really think this might be your problem since you don't have a nasal problem when talking!! Are you by ANY chance letting your jaw draw in toward your throat, instead of dropping it down and outward while you sing?? Not dropping your jaw would not only give you a nasal tone, and it would cause you to lose diction. Just an idea for you. You know I am completely envious of your voice, I wish I had as good an instrument to work with as you do. Let me know if this makes any difference! |

Syber! you're a fricken genius!! Have I told you that?? I pushed ma lower jaw out and sang a couple notes... and the nasal sound DEFINATELY improved... and actually, my talking voice is a teensy bit nasaly, but not nearly as bad as ma singin voice.... interesting.... maybe I'll talk with ma jaw stickin out all the time! ! I'll look like I have an Underbite! ! ! Syberchick wrote: You know I am completely envious of your voice, I wish I had as good an instrument to work with as you do.
You crazy, lady!! Thank u so much... that's quite the compliment! Thanks for ALL your help, girl! U's the bestest! SIDENOTE: has ANYONE out there used the program ACOUSTICA MIXCRAFT?? Cuz that's the one I use.... and I don't know how to get rid of the hissing noise... I tried lookin' it up in the help menu, but it's all greek to me! I need "Mixcraft for Dummies" thanks all!! maybe I should put this is the "techie forum"?? If I don't git an answer here, I might stick it in there too! |

Actually, as I understand it, the 'jaw' thing is all about tension. If you hold too much tension in your lower jaw when you sing, you subconsciously hold your jaw too tightly, forcing your sound to resonate more in your sinuses and keeping you from having a nice, clear open sound. If your jaw relaxes, it naturally drops down and out giving you a larger 'chamber' for your sound.. errr Am I a TOTAL dork, or what?? !!! Anyhoo... glad it helped ya. Crystal wrote: SIDENOTE:

I'd be happy to help you if you wanna switch heheh You might check though, to see if Mixcraft has any sort of 'filter' to eliminate hiss. I know Cool Edit does. |

From a website, from an instructor who trains people to talk differently, and use their voice more naturally- "'If your voice sounds nasal, it is likely that you use limited jaw movement when you speak. That is, you probably open your mouth rather limitedly as you talk. When you speak or sing, the sound waves coming from your voice box are influenced by the spaces of your throat, mouth, and nose (think of the spaces as auditoriums). If you speak or sing with limited mouth opening, you diminish the pleasing effect which your mouth space can have on the sound waves, and, in turn, you emphasize the effect your nasal passages are having on the sound waves. You can lose the nasal quality and achieve a brighter, fuller voice as you learn to move your jaw generously as you speak (or sing)." On a side note- I was in speech therapy for many years, which I think affected the way I sing, and the way I form words and sounds. It forces me to be very conscious of how I talk (or sing) and what muscles, i am using, how my jaw is set, where my tongue is, etc etc. I think I have a lot of control over my voice for that reason, and why i can generally "change" my sound easily.... if that makes sense to you. Prolly not:) I am babbling:) So, go deaf for a while, and go into speech therapy:) |

hmm.... that's very interesting.... here's my vow I, Crystal, do solemnly swear to be more aware of my jaw movements when I sing or speak.. I promise to try and remember to widen and relax my jaw whenever any sounds come forth from my voice box. This, in turn, should improve my singing ability thus creating a more pleasing sound. |

Somewhere, somehow, this thread has taken on a life of its own... One of salty, crunchy nuts in your mouth while singing? I, for one, think DD should demonstrate this act... it was, afterall, his idea! All in favor.... say I.... I I I I I I !! |
