Hi, I've not posted on here for a bit, the venues for karaoke are dwindling over here, as the pubs get quieter and quieter, but there is the odd place where it clings on with some hard cord still attending and making it worthwhile. The two places that I have bothered to rock up to have awful, in my opinion, host. Both have a tendancy to play music when they have people waiting to sing. I have no idea why they do this, as, when I did shows, if I had one person waiting to sing I'd put them on, why keep them waiting? These two clowns in question have requests in from punters yet keep on playing crap music. One of them spends more time outside smoking!!!!! Am I being a bit thick? Can anyone possibly give me a valid reason for doing this? |

they are lazy. they want to just let the "jukebox" run which takes no work on their part, go get their smoke on, etc. and in reality...why not? people still show up, repeatedly. all the owner wants is people in the bar spending money, and they are there spending money. the owner is happy, the host is happy, and people keep coming back, whether they like him or not. is there any reason for him to change? i ask myself that quite often when someone tells me so and so sucks and i should take over the bar. why would they hire me? that bar is packed night after night, the speakers are half blown, the mics suck, he never adjusts anything, he is a dick to the patrons, doesn't bathe before coming to work, plays music between singers and leaves dead air, and it is still packed...with an admission charge to boot. why would the owner possibly want to go from $50 a night to $150 bucks a night? all he wants are the singers spending money, and they do. night after night. we all have those bars, how do we know? our singers tell us about them. how do they know? they are some of the ones going there spending money. why doesn't he change, no need. |

There are people who only know 2 or 3 songs. If you let them sing them too quickly, they might leave and go somewhere else to drink. Make them wait to sing and they stay longer. |

I play HD music video filler between karaoke songs. My bar holds about 200-225 people, and it's mostly full on my Saturday nights. On any given Saturday, that means that there are 20-25 singers and 180-200 non-singers, and the vast majority of those non-singers are either hostile or apathetic at best about karaoke. My upbeat, dancable filler music and nostalgic videos keeps the 90% of the bar that doesn't care about karaoke entertained. I may get less singers in the rotation than some shows, but I also pack in a lot more non-singers in the bar, and filling the bar is the goal, when it all comes down to it. That's been my format for 12 years, BTW. Even in the situation where your bar patrons are nothing but hardcore karaoke singers, you really still need filler to fill the "dead air" while the next singer makes their way to the stage, even if that's only for 20 seconds. It makes for a more seamless, entertaining show. |

Always avoid dead air. Silence is not golden in a bar. A recent study showed that louder sells more booze than quieter by around 20%. Now that is an easy way to increase sales by just a little push of the fader  I run filler music but seldom for more than a few seconds between singers. |

Some KJs are just lazy. Some KJs have no choice but to cater to the majority (where Management instructed the KJ to play dance music for the non-singers). |

Here’s another study, much the same as BigJer’s post. I like this decibel comparison. From the link: “72db is like the sound of traffic on a busy street while 88db is like standing next to a lawnmower. On average bar-goers took 14.5 minutes to finish an 8 oz glass of draught beer when the music was at its normal level.
