This Wednesday night a gunman charged onstage at a nightclub and opened fire on the band and crowd, killing top heavy metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and three other people before a police officer shot him to death.DIME has been compared to such legends as EDDIE VAN HALEN, RANDY RHOADS, JIMI HENDRIX, STEVIE RAY VAUGHN, BILLY GIBBONS, ANGUS YOUNG, TONY IOMMI, GLEN TIPTON, K.K. DOWNING, & ACE FREHLEY. Mentioned among such a skilled and innovative list of players like that is quite an accomplishment in it's own right. I met Darrell a couple of times backstage at Irvine Medows amphitheatre when he was the guitarist for the band Pantera. He was very friendly to me and my friends and seemed like the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back if you asked for it, not to mention he was truely a great guitar player. Darrell was the child prodigy son of country-western songwriter Jerry Abbott. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of those killed and wounded.

Wow... that's horrible. I'm very sorry to hear that such a promising musician was cut down like that (of course, it's horrible to hear something like that about ANYONE one, but this is even worse). Rest in Peace... |

he and his brother, Vinnie Paul Left Pantera and started a band called Damageplan. They were just opening their first song at a well known Rock/Heavy Metal club, the Alrosa Villa in Columbus Ohio when some idiot jumped on stage and started shooting. the rumor mill has it that the guy blamed Dime for breaking up his favorite band ( Pantera) Darrell also made recording appearances on Nickleback's "The Long Road" and has recorded with Ace Frehley, of the band Kiss. Besides the Abbott brothers, Damageplan also includes vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bob Zilla. |

that's a damn shame... I have that Nickelback cd... and it's a good one! Never was into pantera... just missed the boat on them I guess. Never had nothing against 'em, just never got into their stuff. Rest in peace, and dream happy dreams! |

Not a huge fan of the band myself , altho I did see them perform a couple times, and enjoyed their musicianship very much. Darrell was a very innovative and (schooled/trained by some country legends) Guitarist. a sad situation no matter who he was. |

I heard about that today on a radio station here in BC, Canada. Very sad... I heard that the guy was a real whack-job who used to hang out at a local tatoo parlor and make all the patrons nervous, force them into conversation about their favorite music groups...at least they caught him! |
