Post subject:  Pioneer DVD 555 laser
Hi all I know this is a long shot but i have 2 pioneer DVD 555

does anyone know what type of lasers are in these units as both of mine are on there way out and I would like to get these repaired I've contacted pioneer here in the UK but they can't help as I brought these from the US many years ago

the problem they will both play DVD and VCD fine but when I tried to play a CDG they jump on all the tracks and this has happened to both players

Good luck, can't even find any service places for laserdisc/vcd players in the states anymore.
I have prolonged the life of the lenses by opening up the cases and getting in and cleaning the laser lens myself which worked for about 6 months before I had to do it again.

I would suggest getting in touch with someone at Pioneer in either Tokyo or Japan They should have corporate headquarters out there), and ask them what part you might need to replace for your laser assembly, and where you might be able to find that in the US.

Can you open it up and take a picture of the laser pickup for me and post it here. While you have it open see if it has any stickers on the laser assembly or the sled its mounted to. If it does post those numbers for me.

Just a guess - dirty lens maybe? You did not mention lens cleaning.

Agree with Lon. I have a really old pioneer laser cldv800 series I have to clean the lens regularly to eliminate skips especially when playing vcds & cdgs. Good luck.

I have 1 of the same units and I just recently sold another one of those as well. I loved them because they load real fast and are very simple to use, but they both had an issue with skipping. I greatly improved the reliability by mixing 70% isopropyl alcohol with water in a 2 parts alcohol to 1 part water. I put the mixture in a travel size hairspray bottle (2-3 oz) and sprayed every disc and wiped dry with a microfiber cloth just before inserting into the 555 player.

PS I no longer use my unit because I stopped playing cd's. I had to reduce the weight of my rig, and it had to go along with other items in the chain.

70% alcohol is already watered down.

don't use water. and buy 91% alcohol.

tap water will leave a residue on the lens and make it worse, also it dries slow.

i just use straight alcohol with no water, and i've been repairing cd/dvd/blu ray stuff for a long time.

the lens your cleaning is just a focus lens, you also have the lens under the focus lens to clean if you can get to it, most of the time you can't. depends on how the pickup assm was built.

There is a reason to my approach. Alcohol dissolves the "greasy" oily elements that might end up on the disc when handled. Water does a better job of getting rid of non oily smudges (soda, beer, ketchup etc). If you purchase 91% then dilute it 1 to 1. It will still dry very quickly!

PS I never said any thing about using it on the lens.

Ah, i see. yes for cleaning a disc that's fine.
