I'd have to say that Pop Hits Monthly is the best. It's the most expensive per song, but then again you get vocal tracks to which people like.

I'd have to say that Chartbuster is my least favorite. The recordings don't sound good and I'm always hearing complaints about people not being able to see the words. Why did they think white on blue with highlighted white was a good idea? Pop Hits has the right idea. Red on Black.

I have very few complaints on Chartbuster. We are more of a country music area than rock, and would have to say Chartbuster is the best. Haven't had any complaints that they couldn't see the lyrics. Your Video Modulator set correctly?

We are building a core of Chartbuster and then we will bring in the
Sound Choice foundations so that the singer can have a choice.

Worst would have to be Sweet Georgia Brown and SAV

Best to my ear - Sound Choice, Pop Hits Monthly, Chartbuster (country only)
Worst to my ear - pretty much everything else, although there are ALWAYS exceptions to that .

It would depend on genre but overall the best is Sound Choice,

One of the worst is the majority of the Music Maestro 6000 series.

Sound Choice is the best.....I think Music Maestro really are the worse....they change lirics, the tempo is often much slower than the original.....Chartbuster is ok, and we do sing mostly country....we also have a lot of Top Hits Monthly.....But Sound Choice is the music we like best

M. Maestro USED to be the worst, but they've really come a long way since they started. Chartbuster totally tanks the pop and rock, but they're real good on country.

My personal favorites: Sound Choice and Pioneer are the best
Worst? Backstage

And yes, on the words in white highlighted with white, that sounds like a RF Modulator switch that's set for the wrong frequency. Please check it, and while the offending disc is playing, flip the switch.
Image
It's hard to see from this image, but the switch next to the yellow video rca input is for channel 3 or 4... the OTHER switch over on the right hand side between the two coax... that's your frequency setting.

This is due to the differences in voltages used between Europe and America.

It's so hard to declare one manufacturer as the unequivocal best or worst. However, Sound Choice tends to consistently produce good quality tracks. Nutech is my least favorite. I have some cheaper discs that have better renditions of certain songs than Sound Choice. If there is a style or singer that you are partial to, do not assume that Sound Choice or any other make is the disc to buy. Listen to the tracks and sing along with them. Some websites have clips of the tracks. Let your ears and voice be the determining factor. I have found that Legends does a better job with a few Bob Marley tunes than Sound Choice. If you are building a core set or starter pack, then it makes sense to factor the labels general reputation into your decision. Other factors include whether it is for pro use, budget, and culture of the area you reside in. By culture I mean if you are KJ in an area where you know 80% of your clientele is going to sing country, then choose a label that is well respected for that genre.

Cheers

I'm partial to Sound Choice, Top Tunes and occasionally DKG discs. I despise Chartbuster for anything other than country and I'll usually avoid Music Maestro unless I don't have a choice....

I try to avoid Backstage and NuTech (SAVA and SAVP series) like the plague. They are absolutely terrible.

Music Maestro and Sweet Georgia Brown I also try to avoid, but not in plaguelike proportions. Both of these can be pretty hit or miss.

I'll push the "what everybody else said" button on the Sound Choice and Chartbuster Country discs.

Metalgod, tell me about the "Original footage VCD's"...you've got my curiosity going. Are these VCD's that have the actual performers on the screen with the lyrics? I've had a customer bugging me about this very thing for ages! I'd love to surprise him with a few of these!

I personally have not yet heard a bad track from ZOOM.... they must be my faves...

As for the others, they all have their good and bad tracks, but I'll go with the others on soundchoice... :)

fairly good and consistant list- Soundchoice, zoom, the monthlies, top tunes, pioneer, DK, Original Footage VCD's, Motown original artist set, karaoke classics (not the priddis re-relase), radio starz, dangerous and dangerous hot hits, star disc, All Hits, northstar pop and country, nashville sound and a couple of other small series...

fairly bad- SAV-A, SAV-P, BMB, Nikkodo, backstage (although I prefer a few of the songs to others), music maestro (again, a few stand out), Sweet georgia brown, Nutech, chartbuster, RCA, legends, sybersounds, sunfly, JVC, Priddis and a number of lesser known series...

just a few more to chew on- tig

Great subject,

I think we can't say that one brand is all good or all bad? I have excellent SC but some of them are just bad & the same song on a Pocket Song will be much better! I've recorded some songs using Backstage & people were impressed of the backing, same with some SAV!!

I have lot's of my recording that came from Backsage, SAV and people wouldn't believe me, once you edit some of there songs, you do get high quality, there problems is more a poor recording than a poor arrangement!

Chartbuster for country sounds really good, SC for rock is excellent, Legend is excellent on one cd and TERRIBLE on another (Lionel Richie 077).

I've subbed Engelbert's stuff that came from a Backstage and was getting very good comments :!: Let your ears be the judge not the brand!

Exactly. Music Maestro sucks donkey dongs.

I had the misfortune of picking up Music Maestro# 6170 because it had a good song list (lots of rap and hip hop stuff). This was by far the worst CD I've ever bought.

As far as the best, I agree the SC is probably one of the best. I also like the Pop Hits Monthly collection they put out. They're always updated each month and they usually have a good selection.

I own six music maestro discs, and they are pretty good. I think MM's version of "Easy Tonight" is STILL the best I've heard yet.

The OLDER discs, I'll grant you, were not that good. But I've found much worse in other manufacturers. I personally think DK is the pitts. But If you were brought up on them (old school cdg), you have no problem with them. I personally prefer Pioneer to sc on nearly every song! But a lot of the modern hits that they put out in 1995 and 1996, they did just OK with, where THM and PHM did a much better job.

OK....fixin' to show my age here...my personal favorite is the Pioneer Laser Disk. At least with the disks I have, they're pretty on the money. After that I suppose the Pioneer CD+G, Chartbuster (I'm a country fan) and Soundchoice. One of the worst in my opinion, is Nutech. It's not so much the music that makes me angry, it's the fact that the lyrics don't work right half the time. Nothing worse to be singing and all of a sudden the lyrics are doing squirelly things!!

I have almost the whole laser series from Pioneer as well as almost all the dvds. Sad that they lost so many songs in the transfer to dvd and to cdg...
