My father has the sweet georgia brown collection (66 discs) and i bought him the dk karaoke collection (99 discs) for christmas. A friend of mine made the first book he has now, but my father doen't have the songlist creator program, i wanted to make a new book for him for christmas, but i really would hate to attempt, alphabetically to add all of the new tracks... and theres no way i can afford to buy him the creator program too... if there is anyone who may be kind enough to send me a list for a book in adobe readable format, it would be greatly appriciated...my email is faded_tatoo@yahoo.com
thanxs

I do what knightshow does as far as searching for the discs and artist/titles. However, I have all mine stored in an Excel spreadsheet. I type in the artist, song title, disc# and track# as I get them. Excel has a great sort feature so you don't have to worry about entering anything alphabetically. It'll do it for you.

If you don't want to buy the KJ Pro software, then just have someone throw it into Excel for you and then Excel can sort it all for you.

Do you need the DK or the SGB set in Excel?

Also DK makes two sets. The original and the millenium set. You'll need to be specific.

Interesting...

They can't afford a list creation program (understandable) so you recommend they use an application that costs far more than the list creation program....

Not everyone has Microsoft Excel...

I pulled the list of discs from auctions on eBay and other sites that list all the songs, artists, track, and disc numbers. I then 'massage' the data into a spreadsheet for sorting and printing. Yes, I too use Microsoft Excel, but if you don't have it, you can get OpenOffice.org which has an excellent spreadsheet program (it's open source, free, and based on StarOffice from Sun).

For the number of discs/tracks you have OpenOffice, StarOffice, Excel, Lotus 1-2-3, and other similar applications work well. If you start dealing with over 8-10,000 tracks you should look at using a database application (Access, FoxPro, dBase, FileMaker, etc) since many of the spreadsheet programs are limited to about 8000 lines, 16000 lines, or 32000 lines (depending on the application).

As a worst case scenario, you can always just type in all the tracks and sort when you're done. I typically have 2 books for the 'singers' - 1 sorted by artist and the second by song title. I have another sorted by disc/track that I use in addition to the other two for doublechecking occasionally.

Give someone a fish and they eat for a day. Teach them to fish and they are fed for a lifetime - or at least until they die from mercury poisoning caused by all the runoff....

I keep mine in Excel (which theoretically goes to some 65.5K lines - never happen in karaoke I would think). For more advanced printing, if you have the office suite, you can easily export the list to Access and then do the multi-column thingy, with graphics and the like. My Access skills have gotten pretty rusty, so I've kept with strictly Excel for the prints. On the DJ end, I built an interface a few years ago that seems to keep working well, so the music subscriptions I maintain in Excel print pretty well via Access.

Access works great for me as well, I just have the singer write the name of the song and their name on the list as well as the artist...no need for disc #...then use the search filter in access to find the track...to print books I just Export the file to Excell.

If you are in access anyhow, print a report. you can get a much more professional looking songbook. I even have mine do grouping by aritst, song, or whatever.

Looking at the price of MS Office, how many of you legally own Access or Excel?

I was generally under the impression that the MS office suite (at least the home pc version) was preloaded on most machines that are sold today. I wouldn't buy one unless it was included in the software bundle.

Granted, the pro versions are VERY expensive, but they provide added features as well.

Office Standard is offered on most pc's from major manufacturers - in a 60-day TRIAL version. After 60 days you have to buy and register the product to keep using it.

Microsoft Works comes with nearly all pc's and has spreadsheet functionality, but it's not that great. Marginal at best.

The Professional version of office simply adds Access in most cases. Sometimes they tack on Publisher or FrontPage as well.

If you don't have Microsoft Office and don't want to drop $500 (give or take) but do want to get it - you can enroll in a continuing education class at your local college for almost nothing. Go to the campus bookstore with your id and office standard/pro is about $150 in the Educational Use version. You can sometimes get these same versions from other stores (CompUSA, etc) if you have kids in school, are enrolled in school yourself, or are a professional educator. The version is the same, but the licensing and cost is different.

Other alternatives are StarOffice (from Sun) and Applixware Office Suite.

Of course you could just download OpenOffice.org (or buy one of the alternatives agove) and give Microsoft the finger! (Giving Microsoft the finger is always a good thing... and this is coming from a current/former Microsoft Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified Trainer, and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer).
