Post subject:  Microphone clips

OK, I now have an Audix OM-5 and a Sennheiser E835 for my stage mics. I had an old universal mic stand clip and it worked with the Audix, but it was too small for the Sennheiser. The Sennheiser comes with a clip, but it's not the slide-in kind: it's a push-in. It fits the Audix too, but I'm guessing singers will have a hard time figuring out how to take out and put back the mics.

So, basically, I want a user-friendly mic clip that can accommodate a number of sizes. I was thinking of a slightly bigger slide-in clip, but then I was wondering: if I add wireless later, would the butterfly-style spring clip fit larger wireless mics, as well as smaller wired mics? Or should I expect the wireless to not fit the same stand as a wired microphone, and get separate sizes and styles?

Why not just get another stand, one for each mic.

Nevermind. I was just wondering whether a butterfly clip would fit a fat wireless mic, since it would probably be easier for most novices to figure out than a snap-in kind, and would have the added benefit of fitting my other mics. I'll just go to a local store and bring the mic once I have wireless. The wired mics would be fine with slide-in clips anyway, for simplicity.

most of your mics SHOULD come with either a microphone holder, or a recommendation for which one would work.

The problem with butterfly grasps. People don't work them right... and they grab them and yank out... and the suckers BREAK! LOL! So if you want to have them, tell people only to use them if they want the stand to sing with. Otherwise, hand the microphone back to you. Or you're going to go thru a lot of microphone clips!

I prefer the mic holders attached to the TV stand, as opposed to separate mic stands (less gear and clutter). If the TV stand doesn't have them, you can cheaply add them with some rubber-enclosed brackets from most any hardware store. For cordless mics, I hand them out and get them back at the end of a song.

Those are some good points. Sounds like I should just use slide-in stands for stage mics, and use anything else just for my booth mic to prevent breakage and confusion. I used the snap-in clip for one of my stage mics, and a couple people weren't sure how to work it. Handing off the wireless mic is a great solution, although it wouldn't hurt to make a safe place to put it.

Thanks for the feedback!
