I have been having a bout with my MS recently and I have lots of time to think....
Ever wonder what people look like when they are recording? !
I just get these images in my head.
I mean sometimes I am in still in my robe (like the Keith Urban song) Now THAT is why I am glad there isn't video with these! !
Just something I think about.

When I record, it is after the baby has gone to sleep, and the neighbors are (hopefully) out, and My husband sits down with a beer, and listens, as I sit (sometimes dressed) and record my song... i don't know if I make any funny faces when i sing.. but seeing as how i HAVE a funny face, I am imagining I do:) Actually, I have a couple songs where You can hear my husband put down his beer glass, and clear his throat, and many where my daughter is yelling to me, and since I have recently moved, many where the neighbors are threatening law suits;) BUT, you aren't the only one to wonder that, someone asked me once, so I took my cam and recorded my process.... was pretty boring:) (i WAS dressed, i made sure of that, no robe for me:) Luckily, all of my songs are one and only takes... and no straining to hit high notes.. i just don't SING songs with high notes:) Lol. Ok, done babbling, I swear it. I am bored... i should record something:)

Hmm, this is a rather interesting question as I have often wondered this very same thing myself... but when I record (and I know I've not submitted "here" before but will eventually once I get back in the mood) I KNOW I look strange because I recorded in front of a mirror one time with the sole purpose of seeing what it looked like.
A little info about me and singing: It took me YEARS before I would sing in front of anyone unless I had plenty of liquid courage running through my veins, even though it was something I had wanted to do since I was a very small child. I was always just way too shy. In my early 20's, I'd go out to karaoke clubs and sing only if I was 3 sheets to the wind (and I am certain I killed a few eardrums in the process.) It was not until late last year that I finally got comfortable singing in front of a crowd, and it got to the point where if I felt I had a little too much to drink, I would not sing anymore. Amazing how things turn around like that. I now prefer to sing sober... and decided I wanted to see what I looked like and how I felt about others seeing me in that moment.
I thought I looked funny (contorted mouth, hands moving along with the music at times, occasional closing of the eyes, etc.) but it didn't bother me enough to want to stop singing... only just to stop watching and/or thinking about what others might see. I decided it would only make me more self-conscious. Besides, the mirror broke anyway...

Hey Debauchery, I can relate to that! That is how I started with this too even tho I had been onstage for years and years.. Karaoke was just scary for some reason....liquid encouragement works but of course the Drambui (sp) is really just to clear the throat ya know!
Melly - That is sooo cute! ! You sound like you and my daughter shop at the same places! (she is 24 and preggers tho)
Hey Never..maybe one week we can have nakid recordings as the genre..

Deb- I hear you there. I have been playing my guitar since I was 8, and singing for longer (I started piano at 3, and have been writing songs since i was a little kid), but, never ONCE sang in front of anyone. Not until I started dating my NOW husband. To this day, my own parents have never heard me, or even a recording...none of my friends even KNOW that I sing, and, I still can't LOOK at justy when I do it:) (The first time I ever played for him, I hid behind my guitar, and couldn't do it, so I made him turn around the other way, so he couldn't see me. I was red, and shaking... it was incredibly embarrasing;) I have never gone to karaoke, or sang publically, for this reason;)
Strangely enough, I used to perform quite often, (I play many brass instruments), esp. with my jazz ensemble, as a tboner, i had many solos, etc... and rarely peed my pants doing THAT...
I wish I wasn't such a wuss.. the whole karaoke thing seems really fun... AND to make things worse.. "liquid courage"?... Damn, i don't drink:)
Maybe I will go out singing in the city, when I go home to Nova Scotia for xmas:).. ok, no i won't;) oops babbling away, blah, don't read it then;)

! Funny...I feel the same way you do! I can not record at home when my BF is there. It is just not possible for me. I feel totally emarassed! I don't know why. I feel better singing in front of 50 people than just one. Or singing to a stranger than someone I know
Can you imagine at my voice lessons....I think you would die! ! She looks at me while I sing....and not only looks...but she watches to see what I am doing when I sing so that she can fix any problems that I may have. It is very hard to do !
The best thing I like about karaoke is that half the people in the bar don't even care about the singing...or who is singing. I mean, when I am there by myself I usually have time to concentrate more on the singers, but when I am with someone, I don't even notice who is singing because I am having a good time!
It is great practice because you are not really paying attention to the crowd. You are looking at the screen. It really helps for the nerves. Plus, once you start doing it...you just get used to it.
I was scared the first few times as well....but now, it is so easy to do Mind over matter, I guess. I just concentrate on something else...and the crowd just seems to disappear
OH AND PS TO STAY ON TOPIC....I sing by my computer...and my cat usually tries to sing with me (I don't know why). He has to sit on my lap or be by me for some strange reason....and I can't push him off !)
I guess he is my biggest fan And when I sing....I generally tend to look angry....I don't have a clue why that is Maybe my eyebrows...that is what my friend said...to lift up my eyebrows when I sing to look happier! I have never seen myself sing until we got a DVD of a competition I was in....it was so strange to watch myself!

! I am glad I now know why all the judges used to say "Smile More" on my comments when I woud sing in competitions.
I used to think...but I am smiling...I don't get it....but now I totally do
But....you are right..at home and karaoke...I don't give a care what I look like...I just want to sing

Most of the places I used to go to DIDN'T pay attention to the singers... I guess to them it was the same as listening to the jukebox -- although I fail to see how with all the SQUAWKING, . However, the place I generally go to now is reknown for their karaoke singers, they made the hole-in-the-wall club what it is. These people are hard-core devoted singers and audiences and everyone pays attention to everyone else. If you flub, they WILL let you know about it! It's good if you're looking to improve your vocals and stage presence but very BAD if you don't like critiques. It broke me of stage fright, though. It made me realize that karaoke is just that: KARAOKE! and it was intended to be fun. So like imatunelover said, if you can't have fun...

I guess I look the weirdest when I am singing?
I put on my earphone, stares at the computer screen, hold the mic, press the record and sing to the music
I hold the mic on my left hand (which the J-Pop Artists always do) and do the dancing actions (if the song has any) with my right hand.
My right leg do the beatings according to the beat of the music... so when I sing fast-tempo songs... I look like a crazy woman trying to kill the ants on the floor
Someone should record the look when I was singing, and send them to some funny video shows...

hmmm ..... let's see.... what do I usually look like..
well... If it's a day off (like today.. yipeee!) then I'm almost ALWAYS in my jammers and wrapped up in my purple soft, soft blanket. Hair all over the place and my geeky glasses on! ! And I ALWAYS have a Dr. Pepper sittin' on my desk..... which causes a few burping bloopers..... then giggling bloopers...... then laughing hysterically bloopers.
and if I've come home from work then depending on WHICH job I was at... I'm either wearing a gas station uniform..... sometimes cover-alls (OH so sexy, I know! ) or a pair of black pants and some kind of liquor-promoting top. (for the liquor store.) And no glasses. Got ma contacts in by then. But of course, I've got ma Dr. Pepper and more bloopers (maybe i should sub some of these! !) and I never wear socks! As soon as I get home they come off! YUCK! I hate socks!
and ALWAYS ALWAYS.... eyes closed and consitpated look on ma face tryin' to hit the high notes.
ok... have I yacked enough for ya?
