Obviously KJing is not exactly like DJing. That said the equipment/skills are a bit overwhelming for a total beginner. Can anybody recommend a book?

no book needed.

1) just learn the popular karaoke duets.
2) interact with your singers
3) make them sound good.

the rest of it comes naturally over time

Watch some live sound mixing YouTube videos. Mixing karaoke is very similar to mixing a live sound band, just you are only mixing two sources (music and vocal) instead of a full band.
