I occasionally have parties here at the house and would like a basic karaoke setup. I found Karafun which seems like it will work out good for the songs. I'm assuming I can use Airplay from my MAC to my Apple TV to get the picture up on my TV. I've read that running the sound thru my home theater may not be a good idea. So I guess I need a powered speaker, a mixer and some mics ?

Yes, as home theater speakers are not designed to do vocals.

Hello vinniemeatball. I also have and use an ultra portable system here.
1) ipad 128gb 2) karafun app with 10.00 subscription 3) Vocopro wireless mics (4channel) 4) Bluetooth wireless 15" speakers.
I dont use apple tv or air play, but i do use an android tablet on a stand as a second display
I picked up the ION bluetooth speakser for $199.00 cad includes stand.
Ditch the home stereo, or you will experience lots of distortion and possible damage tou your home audio gear.
Do keep in mind when using Apple tv and Air play, the audio sends also to your tv through hdmi.
You can connect your audio out from your tv directly to a set of powered speakers and use your tv remote or apple remote to adjust volume.
Wired mics also plugin directly to you powered speakers.
Hope this has answered your question vinnie... Cheers!

A mixer would be recommended, the ION is a toy and sounds like it (I heard on in a big box store the other day).

The IONs are just an example of a powered speaker, Mics plug directly into the speakers.
However you can also pickup a cheap 4 channel mixer and patch the pics in for more control.
