Post subject: | Burn a CD of someone singing |
I would like to offer singers the chance to have their song recorded on a CD at my karaoke shows. Can someone tell me how I can do this, and what equipment I would need? I appreciate your help! |

First, I must offer the caveat of checking into possible licensing agreements, copyrights, other legal matters, yada, yada, yada. If you want to burn a CD, Marantz makes a product that can burn CD's while someone is singing (with or without any background). The product is a Superscope 300, which I use to record myself as an aide to practicing. Hope this helps. |

I agree that you should check the licensing before you even consider it. Last time I checked on doing this I was told that I could do it with Sound Choice discs at the cost of $150 PER TRACK! Not worth it for me... As for ways to record there are lots of ways to do it. The aforementioned product is one way. Recording to a PC and burning the track, recording to tape, Minidisc/Hi-MD, MP3 recorder, and transfering, etc. Lots of ways to get the music recorded. It's the licensing that's the pain. BTW, you 'might' find a way around this but do be careful. You might want to consider a consult w/ an attorney that's familiar with intellectual property and copyright law. |

I used to do it for personal use only... I wouldn't charge anything. BUT I also took no responsibility for the people if they were "busted" by the karaoke cops. As they can't even stop legit pirates from stealing karaoke tracks, the recording of someone being giggly at a karaoke party is REALLY low on the scans of the k.cops. Worrying about licensing... pshaw! |

Even though many of us have recorded songs in the past, and sometimes complete gigs, I'd review the licensing if I was going to advertise offering the recordings. Especially if I was going to sell them. Even though cracking down on the real karaoke pirates isn't happening, it always helps to know where you stand legally if for no other reason than you're protecting yourself and your business interests. |

and I would tend to agree with you Mr. Ed. But I'll change my stance when the multiriggers and illegal downloaders turned kjs are stopped. |
