Hi,

New here and wanted to ping other KJ's on different ideas besides the normal singing contests? Trying to be creative like a screaming orgasm contest for the ladies.... Does anyone else do interesting or have you seen other interesting contests to make things fun? We don't have trouble packing the house on Thursdays 80+ people with 20 - 25 singer, but I want to make it more than just singing karaoke...

I don't know what a "screaming orgasm" contest is, but I can guarantee you that it's bound to offend some people in your audience. Don't assume that everybody has the same views on sexuality, some people can be quite conservative when it comes to that.

The crowd is there because they WANT to sing karaoke, anything you do to take away from that is more likely to drive some of them away than keep em coming back. If they want spring break style contests they'll drive to Daytona Beach for them.

We have what we call Mystery Karaoke....I cut up an ENTIRE book....and those who sing enter...usually because those who DON"T want to sing won't anyway....LOL

I put tickets in a bowl....and periodically thru the night....i pull a name....i reach in the bucket....pull a song....and they sing it, No MATTER what WHAT the song is....if they complete it....they win a prize. We and the venue buy joke gifts....it always goes over well.

The Screaming Orgasm contest is interesting....LOL....and i think a few in ours would go for it....but i would fear the RUN on that shot.....the bartender would die from exhaustion making them....

And NO..not every venue would welcome it...but....i take that it was just an idea....:-)

A lot of the crowd comes to see me and my antics. Yes most are there to sing, but I'm there to entertain the crowd and keep everyone even the non singers involved in what is happening on stage whether its having the crowd sing the chorus, putting in explicit lyrics during maragritaville, or telling a joke here and there. Realistically everyone is there to be entertained. We are not hardcore gotta sing on American Idol people. We want to have fun and create an environment that promotes that. I don't want a singing contest because its passe and too hard to judge. Karaoke is not about how well you sing its about entertainment otherwise the people that don't sing well would never come out. Besides... sex sells...

Karaoke supprise is fun and pretty much everyone that comes will sing anything I put them up for especially if its a fun song even if they can't sing it properly. We start at 8 and the antics start after 10. The venue prefers if I don't say F*** unitl after 10. Its a really big joke for everyone in the crowd because people will get on the mic and say... its after 10!!!!!!! So its rather amusing. I put in my intro in the intro section that I'm an amature standup comedian so... I recently broke the year and a half standing sales record by 400 and in a small venue thats a lot.

Thanks for the suggestion I'll have to bring prize up to the management and test that theory!

Kamikaze karaoke is always a lot of fun as long as the people there can enjoy it and know that it's kamikaze. I once sang 'Did I Shave My Legs For This'. Never even heard the song before, didn't know the tune, didn't know the words, it was HORRIBLE... most of the crowd was singing the words thank God!

We do little 'contests' that are impromptu - like a prize for the next person to sing up that hasn't sung all night. They get a prize after they sing a song (usually a T-Shirt, hat, sticker, etc from the liqour distributor).

It's all about having fun. I saw someone that actually had patches made up and gave them out to different people based on what they sang. 5 songs in a genre you get the patch for that genre, etc. A nice idea and builds loyalty to the show. They make a big deal out of each person getting an award so it's a lot of fun.

Want to spice up a contest! Provide a decent prize.

I enter all kind of contest, with everything from a token cash prize to $500.00. I have seen t-shirts, trophies, homade trophies, etc.....

The reality is that the big cash prize attracts those of us on who frequent contest.

Contest are a touchy subject anyway. Some KJs absolutely hate them. Generally the karaoke is for fun crowd. I suggest to some of us particpating in contests is fun.

I personally hate gimmick contests, but each to their own. I prefer the straight up contest with good judges and a good cash prize. Have one of these and advertize well, you'll see a lot of new faces. Depends what you want I suppose. Large contest tend to attract a lot of good singers, but this sometimes overwhems the regular crowd. Singers who move from contest to contest tend not to be a regular anywhere and tend not to support any one show. If the idea is to reward the regular crowd, then the big contest is not the best way to do it.

I move in a circle of singers who frequent the larger contests and we tend to take our particpation more seriously. We practice, buy our own discs, have contest clothing and we worry too much about our preformance.

Basicly we're dual addicted, to Karaoke and Karaoke Contests. LOL :rotflmao:

Oh how wrong you can be.......

bar full of drunks + bags of assorted baloons (twisty ones a must) = some interesting hats (and perverted too)

baby bottle beer chug
music/movie trivias
scavenger hunt (usually a state quarter)

there are more, but i can't think of them.

Just post the title, author and/or ISBN. We know we can find the book on any of a number of local and internet book sites.

I posted this in another thread a while back but....

I saw a contest a while back where they use the 'scoring' mechanism built into some of the pioneer laserdisc players to 'grade' the singers. You're awarded a cash prize starting at 60 pts with $3 all the way up to $10 for a 90-95. Over 95 is an overachiever which gets no prize. I dont' know if the sponsors carry those players or if they're even still available but if you happen to have one.....

Here's a contest I've done that is fun.

Select a disc, one that has a lot of popular songs. Then invite people to sign up. No more contestants than there are songs on the disc. Each song can only be selected once. The thing is, without seeing what the songs are, people have to select an unchosen number. When you're out of songs on the disc, no more contestants.

Then....you take away the moniter. I'm the only one who can see the words and people tend to huddle behind me to watch the words. I then count the # of lines a singer completes correctely. I'll let small slips pass, but if they get a complete line wrong or just don't know it, they're done.

You'll see a lot of blank stares, lots of friends trying to help out by singing loudly while standing behind the only working moniter, etc. It's purely luck of the draw combined with musical knowledge. It's not a contest of who has the best voice, it's a contest of who can sing the most lines of a song correctly (or at least close enough to convince us).

I don't know if I explained this well, but it really is a lot of fun and seems to draw everyone into the excitement. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. :)

Dang KKid, I have my own discs and I guess I "practice," but that's mainly at the show. But I've never bought specific clothes. You guys do go all out.

Then again, I'm not really much of a singer anyhow. I let my friends enter those contests.

That contest, I like...I like it a LOT...

I've had a couple of nights whn from sheer boredom at hearing the same people sing the SAME songs OVER AND OVER AGAIN I've done "Stump the KJ"...same idea as Blonde KJ's, just that the audience picks the songs for the KJ...first person to get me to stumble over more than one line wins whatever the pot is for that night...it's fun for them (they feel like they're getting to embarrass me), and it helps ME get through a slow night...
