I have a great gig at a newer bar in town that has been so successful that the owner wants to add a second night. I am the third company she has tried, and the first to pull in a good crowd.

However, I'm still pulling in the divas that frequent every show in town. Of course they whine and cry that my rotation isn't fair etc, and one night I actually had to get in the face with one of these divas who had the manager pulled aside for 20 minutes complaining about me. Sorry you don't like rotations with 30+ people. Go somewhere else.

One of these divas own her own karaoke business. She doesn't have any current shows that I know of. I'm assuming it was her that sent the owner a long message suggesting all the things I am doing wrong and how they could improve the show if the owner wanted to discuss things in private (try to steal my show).

I've been in business for almost 9 years. I run things a certain way and will not change. I mix new singers with old, allow duets to not count as songs for BOTH singers (still counts for one of them), etc. The only people that ever have a problem with this are the divas. I don't cater to them and never will, when for years I've witnessed them coming to my shows and only drinking water or pop. A couple years ago I had one of them tell me that word would spread of my unfair rotation and I would lose business (when he had sang several times at a slower show, but someone else sang more - boo hoo). If they believe my method is unfair to them, I don't care. My responsibility is to the patrons that are out for a good time and actually drink.

Needless to say I explained why I run things the way I do and why the suggestions this person was making were wrong. I also was not polite about my disposition over this "advise". Thankfully the owner laughed about it. I've been in business long enough to know what I'm doing, stand my ground, and not take any crap. I've maintained 5 shows for years. I've also learned that most other local hosts hate me because I "take all the business". All I can say is, haters gonna hate. I have a passion for karaoke and that is why I thrive. There are a small number of hosts locally that I respect, but that number isn't very large. Troy on here is one of them, along with a couple of the old R&S hosts. We have different philosophies on how a show should run, and I have no intention of changing.

Tell the divas to go some where, but just not here. Stand your ground and try to have some fun. You can fool some of the people some of the time , but you can only fool all of the people some of the time. After I rewrote that I don't think it works for this.

I have been only an occasional host at the venue that I regularly host at because of health reasons, so I have had 2 hosts covering for me. The one that covered until late April did a good job, but in season it is hard to fail as far as attendance is concerned. He had good equipment, lights and was pretty efficient.

My off season host, from May to present, has a more challenging job of drawing and keeping a crowd. He only recently hooked up an audience TV and has no DJ lights. He uses a free Karaoke app for hosting which does not track histories. My venue always has a large rotation (20 to 45) that shows up way before the start time. A host has to be patient and efficient to handle the instant inundation of singers. On the flip side, once you get the rush all signed up you can almost rest. A host that is easily flustered can be challenged.

Neither host sends out a weekly email blast and neither take photos and flirt with the customers (especially like my wife does). So now I just heard that the venue is going to discontinue karaoke because of declining revenues (yes, too many water drinkers). I wouldn't say that I am being sabotaged, but I am being let down. Most hosts in my area are way too slow for my liking or are busy on the nights that I need.

So my current host and winter host will have to try and keep things going.

That's how I do things too. Simple and fair to everyone. It's hard to keep the diva's happy... but if they can find a show that will bend to them, tell them to go there.

The divas frequent EVERY show in the area,and many don't even come to my shows anymore, but frequent slower shows where they can sing more. No skin off my back.

We simply DON'T do diva...

I've gotten so many lines about why someone should be the star of the night I could write a book on it!

And if I had a nickle for everyone who said they had talent, but turned out ho-hum, I could retire already!

Here is a Pro-tip from me to the divas: Get yourself a band, and headline all you like! Get yourself a nice big juicy set and wear your most sexy outfit and really go all out, because here, you are:

Just. Another. Singer.

-: where we take the good singers with the bad, the people who work 9-5 and the guy who can strut his stuff on stage no help needed. If you can't do the time, don't wait in my line.
