I'm new to home karaoke. What is the best system to buy? I want to be able to Karaoke in my home and also do outside parties (for about 100 people on a large 1 acre lot.) We bought a VocoPro Gig star and used it for about one month and now it won't power up some of the time. We are having to send it back to VocoPro to have it worked on. Did we make a mistake by purchasing a VocoPro? What is the best, most reliable, system out there for the money?

PS. I would also like to purchase extra speakers for outside parties....any suggestions?

Best would be to put together a small PA system.
But that also depends on what kind of budget you are talking.

Probably between 2-3K for a budget. I would also like to use the speakers for outdoor movies as well. I have about 200 CDG's already so I don't think the PC route will work for me (or will it?) Can you give me a quick list of what I would need to buy...(with the understanding that I am totally a music equipment novice...so when you use big words like "amp" I really have no idea what you are talking about. ) Thank you for the reply to my question BTW. That budget you can get decent equipment.
Computer route is just fine with that many discs - downside is the time it will take to rip them to the computer. Upside is once that task is done - you will never need to do it or use the discs again, but you will still need to keep the discs for legal purposes. Most laptops of today are quite capable of running the karaoke software. Couple things it will need for sure is the ability to have 'extended desktop' (this is to get the words to the tv or 2nd screen) and a dvd drive for ripping the discs to the computer.

As far as the PA, it may all seem intimidating, but is not that hard once you start to work on it. Hooking it up is pretty simple as well - all a matter of outputs to inputs essentially.

Misc microphone cords to connect the mixer to the speakers & wireless microphones to the mixer. USB cable to get the computer to the mixer.

This PA system will run you under $1500, will sound pretty equal to most karaoke setup's. Will be able to be used outside (in smaller settings, trying to fill a 1 acre setting would require more speakers to do it effectively). Now as far as movies go, PA systems don't usually sound as good on movies, leave that to a home theater surround sound system.

I agree 100% with everything said here EXCEPT for the bit about the home theatre comment. With a proper separate home theatre RECIEVER those EV speakers would make AWESOME front speakers, and you could add a decent set of rear and a center channel speaker for the surround sound that would blow anything that you could get as a complete system away *at least the cheap all in one systems you can get for less than $500*

Or as an alternative, they could get a decent sound card for karaoke, that could also route a DTS surround, and send each output channel to a powered speaker. EVs for the front and left right channel, sub to a powered subwoofer, rear left and right so a pair of powered powered speakers that do not have to be anywhere near as good/powerful as the EVs.

I think most folks here missed the part about movies OUTSIDE. All you would need to add is a big sub for more bass and it should sound great, and all the rest of course.

So if I use the K-Jams with my Mac would everything else be the same? Are the Mixers Mac compatible as well (I know...probably a lame question. )
