Anyone recognize the version of In The Midnight Hour from LEG148-17 or LEG183-01? It's not Wilson Pickett, Commitments or The Jam, as far as I can tell. Thanks. |

It's labeled as the Wilson Picket version, so I'm sure they at least worked off that, but it is still studio musicians, and that disc is right in the era where changing just a couple minor items in the arrangement saved some licencing hassle. |

I've come across a few Legends and other manufacturers' versions that were labeled as one artist when clearly the version was not from that artist. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but I know I've changed many artist names from the listed artist to the correct artist. I just now let soundhound listen to it, and it came up with artist Soul Groove. Same key and tempo as the Legends track. Interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oD6BK8Gbzt4 |

That particular track is identical to the SBI one, and also appears on Sunfly vol. 73. It has become my favourite arrangement of the song, and I have sung it both here and on T.I.K. (here's a link to my rendition on the Showcase if anyone is interested!) My guess is that maybe Wilson Pickett did a live version that sounded like that. [It's like Just Tracks/Pocket Songs version of the Neil Diamond version of I'm a believer - quite different from the 1967 studio version, it's of a live performance from the 80s (I think) and is the best karaoke track of that song out there in my opinion]. By the way, Sunfly also put out another version of "In the midnight hour" with artist style labelled as Pickett but in reality is the Commitments version. The best karaoke in my experience that's closest to the original Pickett recording is the DK one. I used to hate tracks like that which are that far removed from the original recording. I turned that on its head by purchasing these wacky tracks, learning them and approach the song from a completely different angle. With Midnight Hour I ad libbed a lot of the lyrics towards the end. The backing track being so unlike the original song made it easier to make "my" own unique version rather than a bad wannabe WP clone. I would advise you to do the same with yours and have fun with it! I did something similar with SBI's version of I Can See Clearly Now "as performed by Johnny Nash" (yeah right!!) |
