While there are a variety of drives that 'might' read and/or write them, listen to Knightshow...

THE final word is, and will likely remain for quite some time - PLEXTOR. I priced the Plextor DVD +-RW/R DVD Burner today - approx. $150 from CompUSA online.

I have to agree here. Plextor all the way! First of all they do the best CD-RW/DVD-RWs period, but also they have the best CDG support. The are expensive how ever, but it is worth it.
I myself have a Plextor Premium 52x32x52 and I paid $79 for that one, works awesome will all cd/cdg burning programs.
Last week I installed a Plextor 712A - DVD+-RW and it worked awesome too, with all cdg burning programs, in fact it is the fastest cdg burner I have seen and I think it was about $130 or so from a major electronics retail store.

will a plextor 708UF do the job I need to back up and create custom CDG's?

ANY Plextor should be able to do it.

THAT's a sweet little drive. A bit much for me, though. $207 BEFORE rebate

I bought a usb case that houses a cdrom

$25.00 WITH shipping.

Plextor 52X24X52 CD-RW Drive, Model PX-W5224TA-BPS

$45.00 before shipping.

Put the two together, and I make my own custom cdgs (with a bit of help from cdrwin!).

For those of you that DON'T want to make the drive external, you don't need the usb case. I like that cause it'll work with a hard drive as well (what I am using it for!)
