Please bear with me, there is a point to this post.. If this topic is unappropriate, please let me know and we can remove it. I just wanted to see if anyone around here feels the way I did about Brian Wilson's "SMILE" album. I wasn't around for the Beach Boys, or the Beatles, or any 60's group for that matter. However, anyone who knows even the slightest thing about that era knows of the daily struggles that Brian Wilson went through, and I just think he's such an inspiration for completing this album. If there is one man who has finally made me believe anything is possible, it is Brian Wilson. I got the CD today, and popped it into the CD player, and the moment the opening harmonies began, I got chills all over. I've never heard anything like Smile before (save for perhaps Sgt. Pepper, still #1 in my book), and the simple fact that he finished it after almost 40 years is a triumph of the human spirit and a testament to how far he has come as a person. I cheered for Heroes and Villians, and I almost cried when Good Vibrations ended the CD. What a wild ride. Broken into three acts, like any good story, it started strong, settled in the middle and then busted out a phenomenal ending. The point of this post, if I could somehow wrap it up and make it relevant, is that there are a number of highly talented people on this site. Some are hobbyists, some are semi-pro, some are pro, but most of us are dreamers, well, I am for one. Smile just made me believe that even if something doesn't happen now, there's no telling what the future holds for any of us. I will, for one, cherish that CD for a long time, and if you haven't done so, you should check it out! Like I love to end my comments, Bravo to Brian Wilson!! Cheers, Jason |

Brian Wilson is definitely one of the most talented writer/producer/arranger/and performers in rock history! I became familiar with the Beach Boy's during a comeback of there music during the late 70's. But even though I was too young to remember many groups from the 60's era.. I sure learned of them (and their music) later... and Brian's story is one of them. It is amazing that he finally completed this album that has been a looong time in the making.. I haven't heard it yet... but with your post today I sure will!!!! I think his album 'Pet Sounds' was one of the best albums during that era. An album he gave his heart and soul to.. where he broke away from the surfer music and wrote about his true feelings. He sure has an amazing talent for creating complex vocal blends and has an innate ability to know the intricacies of harmony and melody. That is a God given gift! I guess you can also look at Brian's story this way too... success is being true to yourself... it has nothing to do with making it in the music biz or being famous... it has everything to do with being happy... his journey has been a long and troubled one... and it's not over.... but I'm sure happy he is sharing his talent with the world again! So bravo to that!!! |
