:D

who's the loudest KJ here volume-wise during a show?

not speaking-wise on the mic, but your set is the loudest--managers, staff gotta always drop by and be like "turn it down!!"

i gotta admit, i get more complaints to turn the music up than to turn it down

I get asked to turn it down on occasion but usually it's only on busier nights where I bump the volume up to compensate for crowd noise. Only good thing about it is when it is turned up, there is enough power pushing (3500 watts total) so when it is up, it's not ear fatiguing unlike systems with not enough power get turned up that start losing low frequencies & gets ear piercing in the higher frequencies.

You have to learn how to monitor your system, better. I watch my levels very closely. I am usually behind my speakers, so to my the sound is different than what the crowd hears, so I not only go out among the crowd, I watch my meter. And I adjust for the size of the place. I know if I am in a bigger room I need to pump the bass, and back off on the highs. In a smaller place I keep it more even. I get nothing but compliments. When I started doing this, I would get complaints. I DON'T have a 3,500 watt system, so I had to learn to work with what I have. Unless you have a real crappy system, you can make any system sound good, as long as you get to know it and pay attention. BTW, getting a Lexicon Alpha for your computer helps AMAZINGLY!!

I don't want to be known as the loudest KJ anyway. Sure, I turn it up to compensate for crowd noise and for "Living On A Prayer", but I try to leave it so bartenders can take and hear drink orders.

I personally don't like going to karaoke shows that make it difficult to carry on a conversation.

Why would one want to be known as loudest karaoke host? Loudness does not equal good. In most cases, too loud means bad and that the host doesn't have two clues about sound.

I play pretty loud, but also have a pretty high wattage system, so it's a pretty low perceived volume even though it's high decibels. About six months ago, I also started stacking both of my speakers in the middle of the bar. About once a month, some dumbazz that thinks he's smart tells me it hurts my sound quality to not have the traditional stereo image setup, but what they are ignorant to is:

1) I run in mono, so as long as I know what I'm doing coverage wise, it doesn't really matter

2) The reason I moved them in the first place is because now I have solid coverage of every part of the venue EXCEPT the actual bar along the left wall of the venue, so the volume level at the bar is much lower than the rest of the venue. Not only can the bartenders hear themselves, but it's the older regulars who tend to sit at the bar, and they are the ones who tend to want the lower volumes.

The best KJs have the music sound killer while conversation is still possible. Sadly, these are relatively rare.

If you have high quality, well-run equipment I believe that you can be pretty loud while patrons are still able to carry on a conversation at the table. What is terrible is the KJs who overdo the low and low-mids while attenuating the mid-highs. You end up having hard-to-understand lyrics while still not being able to easily converse at your table.

I definitely agree with all of the above. I play my music loud too especially when people start dancing - they like it loud. I even pump the bass during the song’s instrumental break intervals. But yet, it doesn’t hurt the ear & they can still carry-on conversation. Using four qsc hpr122, one qsc kw12 floor monitor & one qsc kw181 sub. All actives.

Anyway, a friend recommended a kj that can sub for me if I ever need to go on vacation. He’s been to my show before but I haven’t been to his’. I offered he can tap to my speaker system but he refused, he’d rather use his own; easier to trouble-shoot.

Came back from vacation, all I hear was “thanks for letting that guy sub for you. We all got ruptured eardrums”. They said he tried to imitate my loudness level but it was ear piercing shrieking sound, like plastic bubble wrap crackle & pop sound at high volumes. Ouch! I think they might be exaggerating a bit.

Betting they weren't :D Low power sound just like that at higher volumes. Don't know what the guy was running, but doesn't sound like it was anything close to what you run.

Not to badmouth a fellow kj nor his gear but I found out his speakers were BMB CS? don’t know the model #.

Don't know about shows but on the forum itself I would propose that the loudest host is  CUEBALL!

Why thank you...

(as I am reaching out to take my Oscar...) I would like to take this moment to thank my Mother and my Father, for without them, this moment never would have been possible.

Boom, Perfect answer Chris. Keeping the sound good, is better than keeping it 'loud'

Maybe not hereat the moment, but Thunder didn't get the name from a loud silence. Steve loves his thumpers (our OTHER debate :-) ) .
