Want would be the point of working in a bar if you can't have a nice cold draft beer???
What , if I came to one of your shows I'd have to buy you a drink too????

Liquid close to the laptop? Fine & dandy as long as your guard is up at all times. Multi-tasking is great but juggling lots of things at one time can come at a hefty price, especially if those tasks include a drink next to the laptop.

It was lesson learned, glass of beer spilled & fried my laptop. Luckily I have a spare in the car, the show was up & running after 15 min. But for all I know your keyboard is probably spill-proof. Anyway, I wish you well, chris! :D

gee chris,

drinking and while working in Washington state is against the law:

State Liquor Control Board spokesman Brian Smith:
“Due to the financial relationship between the entertainer and the licensee, the entertainer is considered an employee. Licensees and employees are not allowed to drink while working.”

Because of the financial relationship, the State Liquor Control Board views a band drinking on stage the same as a bar employee drinking on duty. The first violation in a two-year period results in a five-day suspension or a $500 fine, according to spokeswoman Anne Radford. The second in that time period can result in a seven-day suspension. The third is a 30 day suspension and a fourth could cost the venue its liquor license.

so i'd be careful!

because the bar gets the suspension of liquor license and you the kj/dj will get the cash fine.

probably should remove the incriminating photo and public admittance of doing so in the post to be safe.

I only know this because the venue i'm at got warned just for this reason.
Clarkston, Washington. s.e. corner of the state.

That law is in place but I have yet to hear of ANY entertainer, band, dj, kj, etc being made an example of with it. I don't know many bands that don't drink while playing - except the casino circuits, they do not allow drinking while working.

Granted... I don't live in Washington State.

However; the following quote is far from "law".

State Liquor Control Board spokesman Brian Smith:
“Due to the financial relationship between the entertainer and the licensee, the entertainer is considered an employee. Licensees and employees are not allowed to drink while working.”

Entertainment services and the venues that they service are two separate business entities.

There are two reasons that I would have a hard time accepting this without thorough research.

I would think the State Employment Board (or some such organization) and the state's Department of Revenue might suggest actual guidelines and requirements that govern employees vs independent contractors.

I do not believe that the State Liquor Control Board has any authority over designating employees. Specifically not in an independent contractor situation.

The State Liquor Control Board can't designate the beer and liquor distributors as employees of the licensee because of a "financial relationship".

No basically the law is if you work in a bar - regardless of subcontracted entertainment or actual employees, if you are working (by contract or hourly wages), drinking is prohibited. But again, I've yet to hear of any enforcement of that - ever.

What I find interesting is that your mixer is on the right side. Nothing wrong with that at all. My mixer must be on my left side. I didn't realize this until one night I happened to set up my system with my mixer on the right side. I thought it really wouldn't matter, but boy was I wrong. It made for a long uncomfortable night for me.

Thing is, I do so many shows and I have my routine down to a science and my left hand is just so adept to naturally working my mixer. My right hand sucked at it... lol and I'm right handed. It's all a matter of what you get used to, I guess.

I too need to have my mixer on the left and the computer on the right. I type one handed better with my right. Back in the day I did sound and lights all over the US and up into Canada I all ways had the vocals on channels 1 to 6... and lead guitars on the highest. Back in the 1970's we did not have sub masters on the boards we could afford.

If you're left handed, the mixer has to be on the right side so you don't spill your beer.

I don't care where the mixer is in relation to the PC. I am just as adept at screwing it up regardless of the configuration. :)

That's the beauty of being the boss. I've done it on rare occasion where I needed to check something from the forums. I always have my Facebook page open because people email me or i'll throw up pics of singers or ??

I encourage my hosts to leverage social media during the show to build awareness and buzz. I think it is good business. If people text while working, so what. So long as they are taking requests, keeping the show running, and getting the job done, text away. I do NOT allow phone calls except for emergencies though.

What about those that take requests via text. Kind of hard NOT to be on your phone while doing that.

This is why I will never work for anyone but myself. I understand the value and power of social media and how it has helped make me successful.
