In another thread, there is a discussion about running stereo vs mono. So I thought I would do some testing at home to see how much of a difference there is in a more controlled environment. However, my mixer at home does not have a means of mixing mono vs stereo. Karma does allow to mix stereo vs mono though so I set it there. Problem is, every new song reset my selection back to stereo.

So I shot an email over to Bob Latshaw and he responded quickly with the following -

"You need to set mono as the default. Right click the mono option and you’ll see a little dot next to it (on the right) indicating it’s the default for all new songs."



After doing this, Karma holds the preference.

This information is in the help file (which I chose to not read) -

"MPX (Multiplex Switch) - The multiplex switch by default is set to Stereo which is normal operation. The default setting can be changed by right clicking the option you want as the default. When a new song is played, the MPX switch will switch back to the default setting. This is sometimes used for example for a karaoke track that has vocals on the right channel. Setting the MPX switch to "L" will play only the left channel through both speakers and thereby eliminating the vocals on the right channel. Sometimes setting the default to Mono is useful in situations at a venue where the speakers can't be setup in a way that provides all listeners an equal level of both left and right speakers, or for situations where you only have one speaker."

I've been on the fence on what to upgrade to from Karaoki for some time. I'm thinking for the money Karma maybe a go. I wish I know about this forum when I bought the first time. Oh well.

After exhaustive searches for combining right and left channels by summing and/or combining, using DI boxes, etc., I made a suggestion to Bob to add a mono output to Karma. I was extremely excited to see that he added it last year.

Sometimes it is easy to assume that everyone has all the bells and whistles figured out. Good catch Chris.

you guys are making this harder than it really is:

you don't do it through the software, it's just a different hook up on the mixer to do it.

chris, you run left and right wires from your pc into separate channels both on left input of each stereo channel... assuming your mixer has 2 stereo channels.

you can do the same using the mic channels if needed, there is just one input - no left and right.

then use the pan control and pan to center for mono, so audio is sent to both speakers. then if you wanted to go to stereo really quick you would use the pan knobs one channel left and the other channel to the right.

and if using a usb mixer, you have to forget the usb and use the pc's audio out to do it.
if I remember right a lot of you are using the zed10fx cause of the usb feature.
that's why an external usb audio like the lexicon alpha is a better way to go for usb audio

that's how you get mono out of your mixer...

your mixer's can do amazing things if you learn how to use all the features. and tricks how to hook it up properly.

most external soundcards can also be set to run mono and some internals as well if all else fails.

I was just trying to spread the knowledge on how it's done on any mixer. and chris specifically said his mixer didn't have the means to do it and it does. he just didn't know how, now he does.

The topic was meant to be informative to Karma users. An simple, built-in, free solution.

That aside - My ZED60-10FX Mixer does not have a simple Stereo/Mono Button. To accomplish what you suggest is to forego using the USB input which is one of the primary reasons why I bought this mixer. It would also chew up 2/6 channel strips where using the USB leaves all 6 available for mics, instruments, and other processing.

If I were using a ZED-12FX at home, then it's possible I would use the other solution.

But it's still in stereo. I have the ZED16FX and this is why I still haven't used the usb port, because I want mono. Of course I don't use Karma but that is a nice feature that would save a couple channels, but then again I have a few left over anyway. But would like the sound quality that come with using the USB on the mixer.
