There has been discussion around having that magic number of karaoke tracks that is all you need to run a karaoke show with. After my inventory this morning, I have decided there is no magic number, nor is there any magic collection of tracks.

I have purchased 437 unique downloads in a little less than 2 years. This is above and beyond having a full DK set, a Full Pioneer LaserDisc Set, a SC GEM + Foundation 1,2 + Brick 1,2,3,4,5, almost the full Stellar catalog, and a Chartbuster 12000+ drive all part of my biggest system.

None of those sets cover the current requested music that I buy for my shows.

Yes - Many of the download tracks I bought were performed only once. But many of those people come back to sing again as a result.

It could be argued I could use Sunfly/Zoom/SBI to get most of those 437 on discs, but my singers would have to wait and we have not lived in a "I will just wait" world for a long time. Service your customer now, or risk losing them.

Oh, and my total song count is just shy of 65,000 on my biggest rig.

There is no magic number. And even if you 'did' find that magic number, those songs will consistently change either month to month or year to year with songs being dropped for new (either back catalog or new radio hits) songs to take their place. I think any good kj should have a solid 'core' set but after that, anything that can be bought on singer request on an as needed basis would be the most logical.

The magic number is zero.
These days a well prepared KJ could walk into a gig with an empty drive and satisfy almost all of the singers with instant downloads on the fly, and build a legal library one song at a time.

I have mentioned this before. I am seriously considering doing this for my next rig.

well in my opinion there would be a magic number for a core set of songs IF a kj could predict exactly what there audience would want to sing before actually getting a gig at a venue.

Not likely to happen.

If i were still a host or just starting out, I would probably be happy with what is on the GEM set, and then build up actual requests with downloads on the fly

By building your core set one song at a time through downloads on the fly, not a single dollar is wasted and not a single song goes unsung.
A savvy kj can print an inspiration book of popular song ideas for singers to browse through, and use icroons for a singer kiosk.
That's an instant start-up.
There is no need to make large up front investments in core sets anymore. Most download suppliers offer quantity discounts that make the per song purchase very competitive with any of the core set sellers. The money saved on the initial purchase of a core set of tracks can be better invested in good sound equipment and promotional materials.
This is the future of karaoke.
Those who learn to do it and make it work now will be light years ahead of their competition.

You can't say that around here! There's plastic everywhere. Good post also earthling, I was teasing with you a little there. I like your statement Chris, that's risky and thinking out of the box. Why why load up a hard drive with songs people will never sing, when you can instantly have everything anybody would want to sing, and never worry about an audit.

It's a paradox.

If every karaoke song ever made was down downloadable on the fly in high quality, yes. That would be the obvious solution.

But they aren't. So without trying to sound like Yoda: Unless you want to force people to only sing what you have, you need as many as you will ever be asked for. :D
