This week I was severely chastised for not having the Dude song.

My choices at the moment seem to be a very expensive SC disc (I haven't checked all of the sources on that yet), a very affordable Radio Starz Disc or having a friend send me a nice Zoom gift from the UK. The latter could possibly run afoul of the No Fly list. Yes, I know but it is my choice to minimize those.

So does anyone have an opinion as far as which brand did the best version? I'm guessing I know so let me put it this way--Is the SC version three times better than the Radio Starz? My singers who would sing that kind of song would prefer accuracy on the music side.

Any other brands I have overlooked come up with an unexpected winner on this one?

The Zoom version seems pretty good. Are you REALLY worried about the No Fly list?? Besides, Dude came out way before that nonsense.

I am not too worried but I'm minimizing it. If something ever did come from it then I don't want to have to spend money later replacing those songs or losing money if I had to remove them.

I think it is more that the publishers are punishing the MFRS, rather than us. The MFRS can't make new money on those artists. I think as long as you bought the song in question, from ANY legal company it's fine. You did the right thing. That whatever company sold it to you, well that's another story.

Just a reminder: You can buy individual Zoom discs yourself, with no problems. They just can't be imported in lots for distribution- you can't buy multiples of the same disc.

I've been using the old Ameri-Sing ( my go-to brand for Beatles, BTW) AMS4004 disc for this track for years without complaint, but I'm sure Zoom does a better job.

Go for the Zoom. ....

I am more than aware of the import situation. I stated that I had made a personal decision as to how I wanted to proceed.

No offense intended. The part about "having" a gift sent from a friend misled me- sorry...

I can do that as a last resort but for people on the No Fly list I prefer not to do that. I HATE to get into all this but from what I've been reading the No Fly might possibly make a difference because it would be importing a product that couldn't be made legally in the US. The example given was an author might be in public domain in the UK but still under protection in the US so the same book printed in the UK with the rights holder's permission could be imported but one printed under Public Domain couldn't because it would not have been legal to print it in this country without permission.

In any case, the latest text book decision would seem to add more protection to importing except now the rights owners are scrambling to pressure for renegotiations of treaties and new laws to close loopholes. If there are different opinions coming from various IP lawyers than how do we presume to know it all for sure? For that reason, while I'm not cringing in fear, I'm trying to avoid wasting money if it comes down to having to remove songs from my library. I do have some imports from after 2011 but I'm resisting buying any from the No Fly list.

You aren't getting it. Dude Looks LiKe a Lady is an OLD song. It has already been made. It's is NEW stuff that can't be made. There is no reason why you can't get Dude!! As for the UK downloads, nothing is going to change there and nobody is going to come to your show and tell you that you can't use them.

I realize it is an old song and if there is a disc made in the UK before the 2011 import ban than I wouldn't worry about it at all. But just because a song is old doesn't mean that the disc it is on might be a newly produced disc.

The deal is that I have wasted days and nights reading about this c--p and made my own personal decision regarding it as far as my own business. Believe it or not, even though I think an artist is stupid to not allow their song on karaoke, I know that if I worked hard to create something successful I would resent people trying to get around my rights. You can make different decisions for yourself but I'm going with what I think best for my me.

The bottom line is I was hoping to get some brand reviews on this song.

If you are worried about Zoom (Personally, I'm not...) Radio Starz may be a very good bet. I don't have the Radio Starz Aerosmith disc, but I can tell you their Van Halen and Steely Dan discs are fantastic! I actually prefer Radio Starz over Sound Choice for most of the Van Halen stuff in my library.

Then I repeat the Amer-ising #AMS4004 suggestion. It's OK, and never a complaint. Could probably find it used on E-Bay. As long as the label is OK, I would be happy to professionally re-surface it for if need be.

I know it's unusual, but the Zoom Version is Not very good. the AMS/RSZ version is better. Although the SC version is the best.

I agree! Same here. I think Radio Starz’s Steely Dan is accurate. Sounds like the actual original band played in all the tracks, I might be exaggerating a little here, but it seems like a meticulous & almost exact reproduction imho. But that just me (& BigJer!) :)
