Curious as to what is your best karaoke artist that you sing? In other words, which artist best showcases your vocal range and style?

As for myself, although I sing many different artists and have sung well over 150 different songs, my best artist would be Simply Red.

So far I sing four of their songs: (All Simply Red songs)

Holding Back the Years (best song, get requests for it all the time)
You Make Me Feel Brand New
Stars
Sunrise

I would like to do Air That I Breathe by Simply Red, but sans finding a version by them, I do sing The Hollies version.

For some reason I never tried If You Don't Know Me By Now. Just not sure about that song.

So, what artist makes you shine at the mic? What artist brings out your best?

Thanks :D

Never heard myself, but I think I do Fuel, Creed, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots pretty good. These are the first artists I look for when I go out.

Great topic!

My vocal training has taken me down a strange path, therefore, (and according to my voice coach), I think I sound most like Janet Baker or maybe Frederica von Stade (I'm starting to copy some of her repertoir). Even though I can't hold a candle to either one of them musically, I at least like to think that I am following in their footsteps since I am in the process of being a classically trained mezzo-soprano. My repertoir is not traditionally all mezzo-soprano--- I have recently included quite a bit of soprano repertoir and have even flirted with tenor and a bit of bass/baritone for fun.

The songs that I get the most requests for and that I think suit my voice are "Song to the Moon" from Rusalka, and "Voi che sapete" from Il Nozze di Figaro. I am also trying to perfect "Mi Chiamano Mimi" from La Boheme and "Un Bel Di, Vedramo" from Madama Butterfly. Not the usual things to hear at karaoke, but living in an artsy community has allowed me to try these.

Everyone says I sound like Avril....but I don't think myself that I sound like anyone.

I can sing Miss Independent by Kelly Clarkson, really well, Unwanted by Avril really well, Broken Wing by Martina McBride, I Hope You Dance by Leanne Womak, Unchanined Melody by Leanne Rimes, Beautiful by Christina Aguilear....as my head starts to get bigger and bigger and bigger LOL!

Those are the songs that I would chose for a competition.

I can sing a lot of different genres, and I think that is what makes me unique. :)

Thanks for the posts! Wow, DyingMoose. Classically trained. Wish I could be there for one of your shows. Awesome. I am a high tenor and wish I could do the classical stuff as well. I do sing Sara Smile by Hall and Oates and Daryl Hall is a jazz trained singer and you can definitely hear it in his vocals on that song. He is all up and down the scale. Beautiful.

Ritisroo, I understand where you are coming from. I, also, sing many different genres of music, except rap and headbanger types. I do believe that success in singing is a big part of picking what works for your vocal range. I tend to sing songs that most men cannot sing (karaoke). Although, I have meet a few that can sing up there as well.

Thanks for sharing.

I do a pretty decent Louis Armstrong (gravel and all) and it's one of the first singers I look for when I go out. It never fails to draw a huge response when I do 'What A Wonderful World'. But I've been known to do Guns and Roses (Axle Rose), Tennessee Ernie Ford, Brian Setzer (his swing stuff), Ella Fitzgerald and many others - basically all over the scale. At the place I've been going to most recently the patrons keep wondering what I'll be singing next.

I wish I had some clue, WHAT syle/artist suits my voice. AS it stands, I will sing anything, and I have no clue if it suits me or not... sometimes I think I have someone down.. and then, someone hates it. I have been compared to almost every female artist that I HAVE sang... and than have had another person hate it:)

Ritisroo, Avril? Nah, I don't think you sound like avril:) (mind you, I only know .. one? of her songs? and didn't like it much:)

I would love to go try the whole karaoke thing sometime, but to be honest, i have NO CLUE what in the heck I would sing:)

Very good question!

I think, Engelbert, Elvis, Elton John & Neil Diamond!! Now, I like singing the Beatles, many oldies in fact, anything I wish but it may not always be the best natural fit to my voice!!

Meister, love Brian Setzer. Haven't tried him but a friend of mine does a great Stray Cat Strut and he is only 25! Brian is made to sing swing tho. Awesome.

Now, Gilly. You must get out and do some karaoke. What do you find you can sing along to at home. If it seems to come out effortlessly, then go see if they have anything by that artist in their book. You will love it! Give it a try. :D

LOL! I am the same as you in I don't think I sound like anyone...but I guess I just like Avril's music and can sing most of it well...and if I grew out my hair and put on some grunge, could probably get away with mimicing her (ever see that show Your Big Break, where they imitate artists??)

I just don't like to be compared to anyone because then people get a notion of your music, and compare you to that person forever!

I, like you, am happy being me :)

good topic.... as for me..... I have a hard time singing a lot of stuff without sounding nasal. Maybe i should invest in some vocal classes, huh? But the songs that I sing that don't make me sound like there's a clothespin on my nose all seem to be by Faith Hill and Martina McBride. Most of Amanda Marshall's songs seem to work too. I guess if it's a really strong loud song it's the best, but as soon as I hold back and try not too anger the neighbors (Im in an apartment) it all comes out my nose!! HA! Doesn't that paint a pretty picture.

Well, I sound like myself, obviously, and most of my songs have my own flavour thrown in, but people have said I do a good John Denver, Springsteen, Alice Cooper and Metallica. (Very odd mixture!)

Likewise, I do sound like myself. It just seems that my vocals are closest to Hucknell from Simply Red, but definitely you can hear my own inflections and personality in what I sing. And I sing many many different artists for example, Simply Red, Michael Buble, Elton John, Journey, Styx, Kansas, Boston, Toto, Gary Puckett, Christopher Cross, Asia, Yes, Genesis, Phil collins, Little River Band, Rush, just to name a few.

All have my own flavor though.

I have been blessed with a very versatile vox. I grew up singing 70's hard rock, motown and bubblegum. As a KJ I can pretty much cover most of my clientles needs. I'm a little weak with the newer stuff probably because I just dont feel it. " along with 90% of my following I might add ". Just last night I sung Zeppelin followed by the Stylistics then some Hall and Oates. As far as the classical stuff I enjoy listening to opera , one of my first voice teachers stated that opera was just glorified screaming. He he he...........

Have you all noticed at karaoke that an old song that everyone knows the words to is most always a hit, even if sang poorly? And that oftentimes a newer song extremely well done is not as well recieved. That always cracks me up...

I am so thankful for this site which has subjected me to many different genures, some I had never listened to before, some I have always longed to hear more of and so many new songs I have never heard before... Also to hear how so many different singers can deliver the same song and make it sound totally different that the one who sang it before, yet all be great....God, I do love this place....Sing on friends...!! :D :D :D :D :D

As for who I think I do best, well I think thats right in line with beauty is in the eye of the beholder....How well I do who's songs is in the ear of the listener and what they like to hear.... But, I favor country and gospel...and hard to beat a good ballad....oops like that bluegrass too...heck all of it....But if I could only sing one person's stuff, I would choose Trisha Yearwood....

Thanks ya'll for being here for me to enjoy...

Butterfly, I love the quote in your sig. And you are right, each person brings something different to a song. It is always interesting to hear someone else do the same song.

I also sing both old and new. As I am now 43, I find these days I am enjoying the classics so much more then in my younger days. There is a great wealth of songs to sing that can make you sound good with the classics. Maybe that is why so many of today's artists are rerecording the classics, such as Michael Buble and the like. I have been singing Beyond The Sea by Bobby Darin and can't wait for the Kevin Spacey movie of the same name to come out in November, I believe.

Another reason I like Simply Red is that they do a number of older tunes from Motown and the classics as well, but has a distinct sound just the same. Good stuff!

Wow, didn't know this thread was going to take off like it did. I guess it is a good topic. :D

I think I do a lot of singers fairly well, but my natural voice is probably most like Michael Stipe (REM).

For some reason, however, the artist most recommended for me to sing is Kenny G. I have no idea why!
