My girlfriend loves to sing karaoke, but she gets very nervous, so what she does is once we are called up to sing (always sing together) she has her fag ready and we go up then she can have a puff before we start and again between verses, and in instrumental breaks. I always stand on her right with my arm round her and she holds her fag in her right hand against the mic. Once when we got back to our table someone said to me how could I sing with smoke blowing accross me, I said it was easy and had been doing that since we were 18.

Does anyone else smoke while they're singing on stage or like me do you sing on stage with someone smoking next to you?

No smoking (or drinking) allowed on our stage. Had mishandled cigarette cherries drop into and burn the monitor speakers & had drinks spilled into the video monitor - all accidental, but not going to happen again.

In many states in the United States, smoking in indoor public places is now banned. In WA, OR, CA you can't smoke in bars with the exception being some casinos or Native American facilities.

Idaho and Texas still allow indoor smoking in some areas but most karaoke places don't allow you to smoke on stage.

Yes... No smoking indoors in CO either.

It has been 5 or more years since anyone could smoke indoors in my neck of the woods...

No issues with cigs on stage anymore.

It has been a long time since I smoked cigarettes, but if I recall correctly, I used to bring mine to the mic when I sang.

If smoking was still allowed, I think I would not permit singers to smoke while on stage. It may be selfish, but I successfully quit smoking and cigarette smoke makes me extremely uncomfortable.

Drinks on stage don't really bother me, but I do keep a watchful eye when they are being waved around. I always have a safe place nearby for singers to place their beverages. It's not just the singers on stage, but it is also the patrons of the bar who approach me at my hosting station and lean in with their drinks over my mixing board or lean on the equipment case.

I have been considering building a guard like a sneeze-guard to place over the floor monitor so that the dancers on the back side of it aren't sloshing liquid onto/into it. In addition, I've been considering creating a "shroud" for my hosting station that would sit high enough to deter the leaners and prevent contact with the equipment case... but this seems like a lot to carry around when added to my existing gear.

I have never understood the no smoking/drinking policy on stage. Which is why I never had one. Smoking has been banned in Michigan, so smoking is no longer an issue. However, I always make sure my people have somewhere to set a drink.

...and I've never had a problem.

Back in the days of smoking, I'd chain smoke while running karaoke. I miss that!

I thought I gave the reasons, but maybe not. Damage to equipment has occurred in the past and it's not for that reason. I can't babysit the equipment every minute, so I eliminate those issues.

Several things can happen and none of them are good, besides nonsmokers don't want to use a mic after smoke is blown on it.

I don't mind the drinking side. It is a bar. But there are convenient places for drinks to go at every one of my shows. I have caught people putting drinks on my sub at my show before but it is surprisingly rare considering what I have seen at other karaoke shows.

I have a place they can sit their drinks next to but off the stage and they can sip on it during instrumental breaks, but it can't be on the stage while singing.

I so envy those of you who live in states that have banned smoking in bars!! I WISH they would ban it here in Florida!!!!

Smoking is banned in public places here in Ohio. Back in the 90's it was allowed, and I was a smoker at the time. I quit smoking in 2001, and once I stopped I couldn't believe how badly my equipment smelled from being in smoke filled clubs and by me smoking in my van!

I too have a dedicated spot for singers to set their drinks while on stage. Yet like some of the others have mentioned it's away from the equipment, but not so far away that they can't get to it during instrumental breaks.

Ricgood - my girlfriend does'nt blow smoke into the mic, she holds the mic down when she has a puff, then as she sings the next line while exhaling the smoke goes across the top of the mic rather than on it.

I understand there are those that have their vices but not while there performing. they must leave their drinks at there table if they cant put it down for a few min to sing then they wont sing..really simple..lol

as i don't have stages, it is a bit tricky.
i quit smoking 10 years ago and i hate the smell of a smoky mic from someone who was smoking outside (cant smoke inside in AZ) just before their turn. i use the minty sanitizer afterwards. i get the drinks on the subs sometimes and considering i use Bose and the subs are under 24" high it surprises me. i ask them not to and they listen....that night.

I hate smoking with a passion, however; that hasn't stopped me from allowing singers to smoke while singing if they want to.

I wish they would ban smoking where I live too. Then I wouldn't have to deal with that nasty habit ever again.

No smoking or Drinking while on stage, for the exact same reasons Lon has mentioned. If they have an issue and choose to argue, I simply tell them to leave their credit card with the bartender prior to singing, then if they have an accident, we will simply swipe their card to pay for new equipment :) Usually that ends the argument, its only 4 min of your life....serioulsy

One of the reasons, that I quit running a show, was because of the smoke...so it's been a while, but the only reasons for not allowing drinks on the stage was because I said so.....that's all anyone needs to understand......:)

It sounds like our panels of experts from KS Has recommend NOT SMOKING on stage as our best advice for your girl friend. It really is very inconsiderate to think that it is OK to blow smoke anywhere near a mic that will be shared by non smokers, and as Lon pointed out there are other factors that come into play as well. Maybe she could find another crutch to help her on stage until she gets over her nervousness, like sitting on a stool or holding onto a mic stand. Good luck and I hope she can kick the habit some day soon.

Sounds like the problem isn't necessarily the smoking and drinks, but lack of accommodation. I don't have any equipment (other than the mics and cords) on stage.
