...Please understand I would consider myself a Social Drinker (on an average between 3-8, "12-ounce Beers Per Week") but I will not defend anyone who gets loaded up and decides to get behind the wheel. However, I do have a couple of questions here if it becomes the new law of the land:

#1) How do you think this will affect the food & beverage (restaurant/bar/lounge) industry?

#2) What are your views on how much it is too much? .05, .08, 1.0, etc.?


...By the way, I didn't know there was any Marijuana DUI Laws. Thought they were still trying to figure that one out. Never worried about it since I'm not a toker. :o

MadMusic, for drugs, they take blood samples. In many jurisdictions you can be charged with impaired driving even if you don't blow .08 or above.

They are trying to figure out legal limits for pot here since it's now legal!

There's also a big divide between "NTSB Recommends" and "about to change."

Some states are puppets of the FED, but most, especially here in the South, don't care too much for Federal recommendations (until they cut their funding :))

Either way, this is likely years off, not around the corner.

BTW, A BAC of 0.05 for a 200lb man is 5.5 12 oz light beers in 3 hours.

The current 0.08 is about SEVEN 12 oz light beers in 3 hours for the same 200lb man.

Not much of a difference. I personally wouldn't call myself anywhere close to "DRUNK" after 5-6 beers in 3 hours.

All of the dance halls in eastern WA. closed down after the .08 went into law in WA( almost 20? years ago ). Most of the bars ether had to start to become restaurants or go under. The State Patrol stopped everyone for dui checks for two week all along hyw 2 from Spokane to the Columbia River. No customers no business. Only the larger towns still have a watering hole. Most of them will not pay BMI for karaoke or a jut box. That makes it hard for me to do any shows in the summer when we are in town.

Bar business in Michigan has slowed a lot since a non smoking ban went into effect. And, we've got a new "Super Drunk" law and some very stiff & lasting penalties for your run of the mill DUI. Our "Bars" (little to no food service) have seen a substantial and lasting drop in business.

It all sounds great, lower the BAC limits and everyone will be safer. But, there is an undesired side effect - the bars will have fewer customers and will staff fewer people. It's hard to measure such a thing, but that is what has happened in Michigan. Most "Bar" owners will tell you that they staff fewer employee hours today compared to 3 years ago - when none of these new laws were in effect.
