Currently I have a Pioneer dual tray CDG player and works great.

Just in case, I wanted to find a backup player. I found a Performers Choice PCK-2000 at a good price.

Was wondering if anyone here had experience with this and/or opinions of it for using at a show. Or should I look around and find a second Pioneer or go for an RSQ/JVC triple tray?

Also, for those that have used both, how much 'retraining' would I have to do to switch from a Pioneer to RSQ/JVC?

there is very little "training" needed to go from pioneer twin to the JVC players. They're pretty simple.

The Pioneer is a great unit - my favorite (I started with this and still use one in a house system). The JVC/RSQ triple play is very adequate and will do the job (I use one as my main mobile unit), but if you've already got the twin-tray, for a backup, I'd probably look for a single tray, saving a few bucks - the RSQ-505 DVD/CDG.

My main downticks on the triple play are 1) doesn't show time remaining, 2) cannot directly enter pause mode and 3) takes longer to read discs than the Pioneer. Not show-stoppers though.

Also keep a spare RF converter handy.

Not sure what you mean by not able to directly enter pause mode.

My RSQ 3-tray lets me pause a disc directly on the front panel (by pressing the || buton) and reads the discs pretty quickly (all originals - may be slower for copies though). Takes a little time to flip between discs but if they're already loaded for the next singer it changes before they get to the stage and is ready to go.

It's pretty intuative for operation. The hardest part is to remember NOT to push the eject button beside the flashing light.

The Pioneer players have an auto pause. When you cue your song you hit the number & hit pause, it will then close the tray & cue the disc but instead of playing - it will pause automatically, you don't have to sit & wait for the disc to start & then hit pause like on the JVC/RSQ. The Pioneer also has the auto eject so when the song is over, it will pop the disc that is done so there is no guess work or forgetting which disc is playing & don't accidently hit the eject button.
As far as it reading faster than the JVC I think i'd disagree here, I think the JVC is a hair quicker, but not really enough to make a difference.

Plus, the jvc also plays the additional feature of VCDs which the pioneer dual tray won't do.

I've also noticed that the pioneer dual tray is much more delicately balanced than the JVC. my buddy accidently bumped his dual tray and it went off balanced. It took him a long time to get that sucker back on track.

The JVC is more plastic, and much more flexible and forgiving. However, I bet when it goes... it'll go BAD! !

Hmmm - mine seems slower. One feature I do like though is the karaoke (single) vs. normal (continuous) play modes.

They both can do single play & normal play. The JVC uses a front switch, the Pioneer does it via the Auto Pause button on the front.

Thanks for the replies and comments. Since it seems that both Pioneer and JVC/RSQ are popular, I will start looking for a second player, instead of the Performers Choice.... (maybe make it an eBay Choice!!)

I have an RF converter, but so far have not needed it, as everything so far has had an rca input for video.....

so...... for those that are running two CDG players, is it worth it to get a switch for the video, or just as easy to swap the video cable between the two? Audio is no problem as I just leave them connected to different channels of my powered mixer (Peavey XR600)..

Get a switch for the video! It's a hassle to continually swap plus the switch is cheap from Rat Shack!

agreed. I run a a/b switch at my venue for hooking up two players! and the audio is thru the mixer!

Ok, I third this. I actually have two switch boxes for my show run in parallel so I can queue the couple DVD's I have (which take FOREVER). One goes to a 5" LCD monitor and the other goes to an RF convertor which feeds singer's display (be it my TV or the bar feed). I carry a spare 4 port RF convertor just in case something breaks.

Video switches are cheap (under $25) and well worth not having to switch cables around everytime you switch between equipment. Another option would be if your TV had multiple inputs you 'could' switch between them using the remote or use two RF convertors feeding different channels but it's far easier to push a button in front of you to make the switch.

I didn't want to go into detail, but I do that too, meister! ! I have a tiny 5"portable TV/radio with an A/V hookup (about $25 at a walgreens!)... I run a cable to that so I can see it, and then when it's queued up, I flip the "B" switch on my a/b switch.
