Hello Everyone.  I recently converted to a laptop system and want to add a BBE Sonic Maximer.  But first, a little background on the system...

My laptop, a Dell Inspiration 6400, is connected to the stereo line inputs on my Yamaha EMX-312 powered mixer (channel 9/10).  See picture.

I'm thinking of getting either a BBE VG-360
http://www.bbesound.com/products/consumer/360/

or either a 482i or 882i.

The question is, which would be the best one to get and which would be the best way to hook it up to the powered mixer.

Do I go from the laptop into the BBE and then to the powered mixer?

Oh, and I'm using CompuHost.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Al

Looking at the block diagram i see An FX out but no returns. However I would return to 11/12.

The secret to audio procs is not overdriving them Best is -6 to -3 db in.. This is one disadvantage to placing them between the mixer and main amp.. As you increase the gain for crowd conditions etc the FX increases along with reverbs esp in small areas.

I'm also interested in this. Anything to improve the sound of my voice. Have you used an 882 or any of the Sonic Maximizers?

check out this link for a sample  http://www.youtube.com/hidefaudio

here is another one for the 362 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6fatjizjyU&feature=related

I use a 882I in my karaoke rig. My other systems have a Driverack PA which has a sonic max in the unit.

I would never run a system with out one.

As far as use with a powered mixer it not going to work for proper use it needs to be placed inbetween the mixer and amp the processing is done on the main output singal.

I use it with my Behringer PMH-3000, but it has power amp inserts. So I go:

Code:
Mic --> Mixer --> Mono Out --> EQ --> BBE --> Crossover low --> Power amp insert B --> Subwoofer
Crossover high --> Power amp insert A --> Mains

I don't actually have the BBE in yet, but I know it will easily fit after the EQ and before the crossover, which I am using already.

With this particular powered mixer, you will not be able to connect the BBE to the overall system output - which is generally where you'd put it, unless you plan on using a separate external power amp, which I will assume is not the case.  You can hook it up to either just the vocals or just the music to thicken either up.  To do so just hook in inline between you player (computer) & the mixer inputs - in which you would just need the 482.  If you want to run the vocals through it, then get the 882 for the XLR connectors.

I see the great BBE debate continues. As previously mentioned by Lonnie, i'm afraid you couldn't take full advantage  of the BBE with your particular mixer because of the lack of patching abilities of your powered mixer. The only thing I would add to what has been said previously is that to the best of my knowledge BBE says they are on their fourth generation BBE. I've been using one ever since the 401 was current technology. I recently did some remixing, I own the 402 and the 482I, I don't know that I can tell much if any difference between the two. Their must be because BBE says the 401 was a first generation and the 482I is a fourth generation LOL . Anyway, I did all this typing just to say, for the application I think any BBE would do nicely, I don't think you have to have the latest and greatest tech to accomplish your goal. There are some good deals on EBay for a few of the other models like the 462 and even older. By the way, on my remix, I opted to use the 402, It worked fine.

I have a Driverack PA also, but i have never seen a sonic max listed in the menu, unless you are refereing to their sub harmonic feature, which i never use. Just out of curiosity do you use the compressor and if so what do you set the low, mid and highs on? I've been playing with the compression a lot and still not sold on any particular setting. I don't want to hijack the thread so maybe if you want to share thoughts on the Driverack we could start a thread.

I used a 422 for years & there was nearly no difference (if any - I couldn't hear it) in audio differences between that & the 482 as far as one being better than the other.

Like said check e-bay for used ones.  They all work & sound the same - for the majority.

Thank you all for your help.  I like Lonnie's suggestion about going directly from the laptop into the BBE and then into the Powered Mixer.

I got hold of the manual from Yamaha's website and acording to the manual, the Main L & R Outputs can be used as a pre-amp outputs.  Unless I'm reading this wrong maybe someone can explain it but here's what is says:

MAIN OUT L and R jacks
These unbalanced phone output jacks feed out the main
stereo output. You would typically connect these jacks to
a power amp or powered speakers. The signal sent to
these jacks is adjusted by the MAIN section’s MASTER
knob G and graphic equalizer E.

If that is the case, would these Main Outputs go into the Inputs of the BBE and then the Outputs of the BBE return to channel 7/8 inputs on the powerd mixer?

Thanks Again

Alan

While the Drive rack PA does not have a sonic maximixer function. With the compressor, Parametric EQ, and Sub Harmonic Synth a System can be finely tuned to produce even more amazing results than a typical Sonic Max.

This will not work going from the Main out back into channels, you will create a HUGE feedback loop.  The main out is for if you are connecting to external amps & processors on the way to that external amp.

I just recently got a Yamaha EMX power mixer (EMX212S) PA system that I use for karaoke. I was wondering what if I use 2 BBE Sonic Maximizers, one from the mic system to the powered mixer and another from the laptop to the powered mixer, would that optimize the sound quality output? Also, do the BBE Sonic Maximizers even make that much of a difference in sound quality? I was hoping that I would be able "properly" adjust the settings for this powered mixer instead and get the same results as using a BBE Sonic Maximizer. I'm still a beginner when it comes to sound systems and would appreciate any suggestions.

Sorry, again...

Forget about the BBE, it's just a lot of schmoo for nothing. Watch the video!

You already have your answer in the thread you started in the tech section.
