disc's are not obsolete, YET......

or people wouldn't still pay rediculous prices for them.....

with all the threats of lawsuits, the legit people still want to cover their <span style=font-size:10px><i>(@$%&#!)</i></span> and the only way to do that for sure is to own the disc outright....

when the demand goes away, and the prices for disc's hits rock bottom then i'll believe they are obsolete.

CB, SC, DK, AH 8000 SERIES, PIONEER are still being sold a premium prices!

If you are disc based and you are using the original disc in your show then you are pretty safe. If however like many disc based hosts, you have backed up your library on copy discs, it is the same principal you have to show you are 1:1. True many disc based hosts are not really checked out, it is easier to target the PC hosts. Since the product is on the PC and there is no doubt that it has been shifted and since there are less than 400 certified hosts it would be easy to go down the list and see if you're one of them. If not then you are at least an infringer and the fun begins.

Not exactly suckers Bazza, the disc function has changed from being a basic tool of the job, to verifying what you have in your library is legal, and paid for. In other words it's original function has changed, with the times.

Well, after a nasty 2 month battle with pneumonia and being diagnosed with Congestive heart failure as a result, I'm selling my complete Original DK 99 Set so I can Catch up the bills. =( if anyone is interested, I have listed them on ebay under "Original DK 99 Karaoke Set With Pullout Cases" Thought there might be a few here on the forums that would like to own them.

I own the original DK 1-99 set, as well as most of a second set. I wouldn't mind buying another full set. However, much as I love DK, a $3,000 "buy it now" seems a bit high even to me. While I have seen the set go for as high 2K some time ago, the highest I have seen lately is around $1,500, and as low as $750 for originals in top shape. Crappy economy. Don't get me wrong- if you can get it, GET IT. Just advising on possible adjustments if it doesn't work out that way.

I have my original DK set 1-99 I bought years ago it is the core of my library I paid $1,100.00 new out of the box and they are still in good shape. Most hosts that are established have this set. Your market would be a new host that wants one. The trouble with all discs now is they are an obsolete vehicle for music, with all the new advancements in technology. The main reason to have them if you are a host is to prove your library is legal. Sort of like the gold in Fort Knox backing up the paper money. Chances are you are never going to be audited for your DK library since production was stopped years ago. Thus the one thing that would make them valuable really isn't an issue. Maybe a collector would be a better bet. Have a blessed day.

There will always be a market for them, case in point, the first karaoke format Pioneer lasers are still selling @ ebay both discs & players. Same as this talk about tablets will make laptop obsolete by next year. I’ll believe that when they can put equal amount of storage & fast graphics in a tablet pad.

Gentlemen since most hosts have moved to doing their shows using the PC, you would have to admit technology wise the disc is passe. The main value it has, is to make legitimate the library you have on your PC. It is not so much the value of the discs themselves but rather what they represent investment wise in your business. Ditto Cue, I am an ODB Karaoke Host myself. Not only that, but lately have seen a few- just a few, mind you- PC hosts in my area go back to being ODB. I have yet to question them on their reasons, so I won't speculate here. Either way, the disc isn't dead quite yet.

Don't get me wrong guys I'm still disc based to, since I'm just a couple years away from complete retirement from the industry. There are still a few of us left, it is just that the trend is still running toward the PC as the primary delivery system for karaoke today. The PC does reduce the value of the disc libraries, whether we like it or not. If anything kills karaoke it will be technology making it possible for anyone to be a host. It is the dumbing down of our craft, so to say. Have a blessed day.

There are still plenty of people out there that claim to be ODB Hosts and they have plenty of CDR copied discs in their library of songs. They're just a little harder to spot but they are just as guilty for making illegal copies of the SACRED LOGO, if you ask the Wizard of Oz.

I thought it was all trademark infringement john the trademark infringement is the foot in the door as it were, because the product is on the PC it had to be shifted from it's original format the disc, this can't be done without permission from SC, this right has been upheld by the court. So you are displaying the logo, and using a PC for your show, unless you are one of the less than 400 currently certified hosts you don't have permission to shift the product. This is where the audit should come into play, if you are 1:1 legal then there should be no problem and the process should stop at that point. If however you are not 1:1 you can settle with SC usually that means getting their GEM series, or you can sign an agreement to basically cease and desist operating your enterprise, or you can go to court and take your chances. I have been saying this for about 10 years now which is about the time I stopped buying music in CD format. However, given the climate in karaoke and my desire to be able to prove to anyone that asks if I own what I use, I have chosen to buy discs and use them as my proof of purchase even though I use ripped versions to run my shows. btw....for the anti-SC folks that think that SC products are being dumped in favor of other brands, go spend some time on eBay and look at the $20+ dollars per disc that most of the Spotlight Series discs fetch. Many go for a LOT more than that. There is no other brand except DK that consistently commands prices of that nature. -Chris
