Post subject: | Vegas Karaoke - OMG |
In general, the cheesiest karaoke I've ever seen was in Vegas. Went to several places with bad sound, even worse hosts, and many reasons why so many people make fun of this business. It was a bad version of the Gong Show, with glitter and lights. The only thing keeping any of those shows going is the fact that they see brand new people every day. Because no one in their right mind would ever go back a second time. |

I'm sorry Tymzend, but I cannot fully agree with your statement. Quote: In general, the cheesiest karaoke I've ever seen was in Vegas Spend some time in Saint Louis/Saint Charles and try to find good karaoke We finally found decent karaoke. Not the best sound, biggest selection or a place you'd be proud of to be seen in, but finally, a place you could go to one night a week and spend some fun time. On the other hand, my wife and I have actually done some karaoke in Vegas, and found a place of the beaten path, (a dark scary street) that was really really cool! Great sound, great singers (and a couple of bad ones) and a kick-ass selection. But, Tymzend, I feel your pain. You would expect a lot more from Vegas!

It just looked to me like anybody with 1 speaker and a laptop could get a show (literally, one of the guys had 1 speaker, and a laptop). I think he had more money wrapped up in costumes than in gear. Talk about priorities being backwards. |

One of the Karaoke shows that we used to frequent in Vegas was at The Gold Coast. It was a really great setup with great sound and selection.Sadly about three years ago they removed the bar that that particular show was held at. Then two years ago I found the host from that show playing a Howard Johnstons also in Vegas, and once again a great show. I didn't make it to Vegas this year so I'm not sure if the same guy's still there, but maybe if you go back you could call to see if they still have karaoke at Ho-Jo's. However if you're ever in Laughlin Nv. Be sure to checkout ( Rockin' Jimmy D. ) , his show at the Edgwater may be THE best show on the planet ! He uses the same stage and lights that all the top named groups use when they play there...very fun guy as well, you'll never see a better Beetlejuice immitation than he does..man is that guy funny. ok folks keep on a sangin' see ya'z on the SS. |

I have a topic thread opened up in another FORUM that was discussing the various places in Veags (both good shows and shows to avoid). E-mail me, and I'll send you the URL. |

I went to Ellis Island. It's pretty close to Bally's. The Karaoke was pretty good but the KJ had to perfrom all the time. The bad part was went I went to the bathroom two guys came in with guns to rob the place. One poor guy in a wheel chair dove to the ground and I took off for the exit. The door I tried to go out was locked and one of the gunmen was running behind me. I ducked into the bathroom and he tried the same door. I was thinking, don't come in here and take me hostage. Fortunately he tried another door and split. After that a couple of big dudes got into a fight in the Karaoke bar so there was glass broken all over the floor. This was on my birthday but not really the excitment I was hoping for. It was pretty scary when you here some one yell gimme the money bit-- and look over and see a big gun pointin' at that terrified old lady! |

HOLY #### Budacris!!!!!!!! Glad you're OK!! I think "Vegas" doesn't want anything to distract you from putting your money on the table... but thanks for the tip KJ Denndogg... I'm in Vegas about once a year... but I'm in Laughlin quite frequently... I'm very familiar with the Edgewater... as there are only about 10 major hotel/casino's in town.... I'll be sure to look that one up... also... there is a little bar in Laughlin called 'The Hideout'... it's across the street from The Golden Nugget... all the locals go there for Karaoke... it's not too bad! Also The Ramada Express next door to the Hideout holds karaoke contests every so often... |

THey should have picked a different casino. Ellis Island has $1.00 beers and mixed drinks. All the big money is in the slot machines. |

Ya the drinks were cheap all right. I just couldn't find anything else before I went. I'll ask around here before I go to Vegas again. |

Thanks Sheree , My friend Rockin' Jimmy used to do the show at the Hideout as well , and I think he still does from time to time. The last time we went there it was REAL Cliky there amoungst the locals , so we went over to the Ramada and sang there , but didn't care too much for their song selection , I did have a few of my own disks with us though..so it wasn't so bad! see ya' |

I have to say I had a blast in Vegas. Bad karaoke exists everywhere,I've been to clubs locally on one night for a great show, and went back the next night and that show was the worst. All I'm saying is Vegas karaoke doesn't suck, bad KJ's do. Try the bar in front of Imperial Palace, good sound great crowd, cool KJ. Tony D. |

Tony D. Funny you should talk about Good/Bad experiences at Karaoke. The very place you just mentioned, I had a bad taste left in my mouth. On the night that I went to Tequila Joe's (the place you just mentioned), there was no rhyme or reason to how the KJ called us up. My friends and I handed up our slips together, and we were called very far apart. We also noticed one particular person up 3 times before all of us had been called up once. We then discovered that this KJ worked on BRIBES. That one person had given the KJ a $20 and an excuse that her Husband was dying of Cancer. |

I had a worse experience than that a few years ago at a local place in New York City. The porter had followed the Bartender's Boyfriend into the Bathroom, and shot him in the head. Then he ran out. One bullet had gone through the wall and set off the Alarm System. I was right on the other side of the wall (playing on a Video Machine) when this all happened. Fortunately, the bullet went through a different wall, not the one facing where I was standing. It happened so fast, we didn't even know it was a gunshot. It just sounded like someone had slammed one of the bathroom stalls very hard. After the Porter ran out, we discovered what had happened. He shot the Boyfriend in a jealous rage, because the Boyfriend had regularly made fun of him and belittled, and told him to stop flirting with his Girlfriend (the Bartender). It just so happened, that that was the Bar's last night of business.... their lease had expired, and they were selling the place to someone else. It was about 2 years later that they finally caught him (somewhere in Chicago). |

Actually, except for the crowd, Ellis Island was OK. THe show is owned and run by the casino, so it's just OK. I'vre been around the town, and some of the smaller shows are just great. I try to sing mid week, so the crowds are smaller. Today, I think they only have one paper that lists KJ shows in Vegas. Some rag called "Lounge Entertainment". (They cover Karaoke, Pool, and Darts) But they do have a good listing of smaller clubs, with days and times. Karoke Scene should send Sammy over there to drum up some business, and put out a decent paper. Ya, thats the ticket... |
