Post subject:  TOP 10 THINGS TO SAY AFTER A SINGER IS DONE

I'm just curious as to what people say after a singer is done singing, and if you find yourself saying the same thing quite often. If you have a top 10 (or top 5) things to say, feel free to post!!

actually, if they're good it's "Oh Right on! Give it up for xxxxxxxxxx"

if they're bad it's "How about some applause for xxxxxxxx"

I always say their name... so the people know who to remember.

(All tongue in cheek here; of course, you would NEVER do these for real... right? RIGHT!?)

10. "Oooooooooo... kay!"
9. "Oh, hey! They're done!"
8. "Thank you lord!"
7. "Okay people, you can come out now... people? People!!??"
6. "Oh, you were 'singing?'"
5. "Whoa man, I thought I was having a bad flashback from the '70s"
4. "Anyway..."
3. "Captain, I do ne think I can hold her together much longer!"
2. "Wow, I guess maybe you shouldn't have had the wings before you sang"

AND THE NUMBER ONE THING TO SAY AFTER A SINGER IS DONE...

1. Turn on the sound effect of crickets chirping.

The number 1 thing I say when a song is bombed...

"It really says something when someone can take a song and makes it their own!"
(They think it's a compliment....)

One of my faves after someone really blows up at the mic (usually due to intoxication) is to say, "Now THAT'S karaoke ladies and gentlemen!"

After a bad singer I try to encourage them to try again. I might say something like " Thats what karaoke is all about, Having fun, Now give it up for this singer"

Sometimes when the singer is awesome I have no need to talk much so I might just say "Wow".

It totally depends on the singer and crowd. Sometimes its a great audience and sometimes you need to pump them into a frenzy.

Some regular comments I'll use with a dead audience:

"Did you guys fall asleep already?"
"You can do better than that, Lets hear it"
"c'mon that was great, Give it up"
"For a second I thought this was a wake, Give it up"

To hear some of the replies it almost sounds negative to some of the bomb singers. I give the same respect to all singers and "lets give it up for....." otherwise they will feel embarased, and not try again. after all you don't have to be a good singer to be a good customer. and thats the bottom line.

Dr D--

I think that even though it may seem that some of the comments are harsh toward the bad singers, most hosts have their regulars who KNOW that they screwed the pooch on a song. I would never make a degrading or teasing comment toward a singer I don't know well. Even if I tease a regular about a song they just did, I always encourage them to go back and find another song for a shot at redemption!

Big Mike- While I admit that I do the exact same thing with some of my regulars (I have one that I insist that people clap for because he drinks enough to pay my salary!), something occured to me while I was reading your post. If I'm new to a show, and I hear the KJ make a disrespectful comment to a singer, I don't know if that singer is a regular, a travelling salesman, or is sleeping with the KJ's ex-wife. Therefore, I would be hesitant to sing a song that I wasn't sure that I could nail, to be sure I didn't get the same kind of comment.

This isn't enough for me to change my thinking, because I find it really fun to make fun of people that can take it, but it is something to ponder.

A lot of the time I segway into the next song. For instance, if the previous singer does "The Rose" and then next singer is doing "Pour some Sugar on me", then I would say something like:

"Thanks - (insert name). You know, (next name) looks for a rose, too. Of course, they just want to pour sugar all over it....."

Otherwise I just say "Thank you (name)". I may throw in some other promo bits, too.

I'll say most of the generic punch lines; one of my favorites is when a man finishes a song that's obviously way to high for him:

"If anyone finds a pair of testicles on the floor please return them to xxxxxx, he might need them later. Thank You."

for a SUPER SINGER-----"Hey wont someone PLEEEEEAAASEEEE sign her to a 3-year DEAL!"

for someone really bad-but tried hard----"Hey Give it up! He came up and tried a new one for the first time! Show him SOME LOVE!!"

A Friend was doing a show the other night, and the singer got up to do Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb". The man was drunk off his arse. So at the end of the song my buddy turns to the crowd and says:

"OK. How many think he's 'Comfortably Numb'? How many think he's PAST 'Comfortably Numb'? "

My highest compliment when someone really kicks butt is (spoken with plenty of attitude)

"SHOWOFF".

Crowd ususally like that one.
