Hi all! Great board ya got here. I did several searches for this but came up empty handed and hope you can help me out.
I'm in the market for a home-based system and am trying to get some technicalities outta the way. I figure I have two feasible options:
1) Get the JVC or RSQ DVD/CD+G 505 or 303 or something of that ilk to play most all current karaoke titles.
2) For a wider selection I'd like to be able to consider something like the Pioneer DV-F727 300 disc changer plus a VOCOPRO DA-809G.
My question is two-fold. Which option would you recommend and can ANY DVD player play DVD-based karaoke discs? And am I to assume I could stick a CD+G disc into nearly any DVD player and get playback (audio & video) as long as I had a decoder in the chain?
I guess that's 3-fold! Thanks for your help! (I've got mics and speakers all worked out beyond this point).

Not all players will work with the VocoPro decoder. They even state this on their site. The player has to have digital outputs, then it has to be compatible with their decoder - which they do list the ones they know work - or at least they used to, I haven't been there in a while.
Stick with a player like the RSQ 505 & you should be ok.
**Side note** Some Sound Choice discs will not play in any DVD/cdg combo players due to their MediaCloque anti-copy track.

Awesome thanks for the info. Is there a good jukebox solution for this setup that's under $1000? That would be ideal. Otherwise, I think the RSQ 505 fits the bill for the most part.

you could go CAVS JB-99, which has a hard drive and you convert the songs you own and put them on the hard drive... www.singingstore.com/ssjb99.htm
The Pioneer DV-F727 is a DVD / VCD player ($465 - $599) with a capacity to hold 300 discs in a courasel... It is very easy to hook up a decoder to give you a 300 disc CDG / VCD & DVD player. shopper.cnet.com/4014-6473_9-6899313.html
decoders:
www.karaokecenter.com/cdg1.htm
do some research on the net... you should be able to find options. I found a lot just by typing in on yahoo.com's search engine "300 disc cdg player" !!!
I know a buddy of mine was TALKING about hooking up several of these type of players daisy-chained... but I don't know the logistics that it would take. You might be able to hook them all up thru a multi-switch... and then have the inputs from them going thru the decoder... I dunno about that...
a single player, a cheapo decoder... that would be close to $700... and then you need an AMP and mixer (or go with a combo unit like the AKJ7050 unit), and then speakers... you'd be pushing the $1,000 for everything!
best of luck to you!
Matt

Another one you could try is a Dinosaur..(and quite expensive) and only plays only disc at a time, and will play even the Sound choice media with copy protection. (atleast I have not had a problem yet.)
It's the Pioneer V-888. It's a rare but great find for a versatile KJ it's original intention was a lazer disc player. the best price i have seen lately was $900.00 and alot of webs have pulled thier listings lately. so look at
e-bay.

You're in Seattle, you could come to canada and pick up an Electrohome EH8168. It has CD+G, DVD, CD-R, Kodak, VCD, MP3, etc with key changer. Mine cost $150 Cdn taxes in. I've used it in shows with no problems. It does take 5-10 secs to load but not really that bad all in all.

Great folks! Good advice. The Pioneer F727 is what I was looking at getting with a comparable decoder. Apparently VocoPro is not the best solution, so any suggestions on alternates? I'll check out your link knightshow, thanks!
But I don't want to be stuck with something that might crap out on certain discs (the F727 could feasibly be unable to play some of the SoundChoice line-ups). Again, I'm not looking for a KJ set-up, this is strictly for my house. $1000 is about the upper limit of what I'm willing to spend, but I think I should be able to stay under that for the most part (sans the actual songs of course!).
Anyway, thanks again, you guys have been a great help!

to be honest, I'd not worry about a jukebox and instead, get a single tray from karaoke.com. Right now that sucker's on sale for under $190! WITH a 180 song pack from Priddis! It's a decent set too!
Or you could splurge and get the terrific triple tray. I own a couple of the GOLD ones, and love them to death. And they never have any trouble playing any of the sc stuff...
I also own a RSQ505 (an older one) and it has trouble with the black carbon discs, but none of the others. I've heard the new 505s have that problem addressed!
The convienience of the jukebox is great, but for a home user, I doubt it's really worth the effort!

Good info. You think if I were to get an RSQ or JVC system I could get decent sound through my home theater receiver? I've read that some don't suggest this, but I'm not exactly sure what the drawbacks might be. If I can get by without needing a separate amp I'd be happy.
I own an Onkyo HT-R510 reciever (part of the HT-S760 home theater system). It's got the horsepower needed, I think. And I've seen another JVC karaoke player work just fine in a home theater set-up.
