The bar owner suggested having a "Single Artist" night for karaoke.

Everyone would have to sing songs from a specific band (or solo artists associated with that band).

Personally I dont think it would work beyond about 30 minutes (if that), but does anyone have first hand experience with this.

I do have about 40 songs from the artist, and some of them are sung often by regulars but many other regulars do not have the range to do their style.

I was thinking of counter-proposal that any request for that artist would be moved to the top of the line, and that might give a flavor to the night without totaly forceing people to sing songs they cant or don't like.

Why would the owner want to do that? Would this be for an additional night or take place during the regularly scheduled night?

From a singers point of view I wouldn't like having to sing songs only from one artist even if I could and have done all of their songs at some point. I might sing a song or two depending on the artist, but wouldn't stay much if any after that.

Personally I don't see this being a good thing, for the singers, the crowd (listeners), or the venue.

sounds to me like a bad idea to do an entirely same artist night. Maybe a GENRE night but unless you have tons of that artists discs/songs, be ready for the possibility of the same ones being sung all night.

With that said, i wouldnt mind an Elvis or Beatles HOUR or two, but after that i think you would turn off most of your crowd who may not like either one.

I've done 80's nights, modern rock, oldies, and classic rock nights before which were advertised well in advance thereof..and they went well.

Me and a couple of friends just did Single artist rotations last week. Also when an artist/band is in town around that week people sing their songs. Sometimes we made our own theme nights for ourselves, other people got the notion of what we were doing and joined in on the fun and changed their songs for that rotation or that night. And then if someone didn't go with the flow it felt out of sync with everyone's choices. And if the artist night is a thing, I'd go for Covers, side projects, or even sing another song in the style of that singer to have some flair to it.

Sounds like the bar owner is getting tired of hearing the same old songs everytime and wants to try to change it up.

I've done similar things with a group of regulars who wanted a change of pace. We would invent various games usually taking advantage of a slow night to do it.

The Tribute Game:
Six or more singers each write a favorite artist name on a slip of paper. (That artist must have enough songs in karaoke to sustain at least one entire rotation of the participants.)

We draw the artist from a hat. Once chosen, a data base of that artist's songs are created (my software does that quickly and easily).

The singer is called up and my on-screen randomizer scrolls through all the songs randomly for everyone to see stopping on one. The singer may choose to sing that song or pass for one more spin but then must sing the next pick.

After a full rotation we move on to the next artist or continue until exhausting the supply of the last artist.

Participation is not required, but all those who do are bunched together in the rotation. And the on-screen fanfare let's everyone else know that they are singing songs out of the norm for them (like a suicide song), so the singers get extra attention by participating.
It's a lot of fun.

There are alot of artists that could sustain multiple rotations even all night, but the chances of keeping a crowd happy by enforcing a single artist night are slim especially without some extra incentive.

We have done similar nights. Just do not force everyone to HAVE to sing those songs - that will not work, this will turn people off that just want to come in to sing - make it an enticement, bar offers drink coupons for singing something from the theme night. 2nd, most karaoke books do not have enough songs from any specific artist to make it a regular event. Even 40 songs is not going to be enough, most people have a hard enough time remembering the popular songs from a specific artist, let alone some of the off the wall or b sides that may be out. There are some Beatles songs that i've never heard before.

I think it's more successful to run a "decade night" rather than a single artist. That way the singers can choose anything from the 80's or 70's or 90's... whatever is chosen for the evening.

It also doesn't exclude any gender.

Clever idea to mix it up once in awhile. I like the thought. It should be advertised ahead time though if its on your regular night.

It wouldn't bring me in specifically, but it wouldn't keep me away either.

Make it a tie-in. Sing a song by the featured artist and get a drink or appetizer special. 1/2 off, 2-for-1, etc.
