I like a host that joins in when ANY singer is floundering. Unless it's just a drunk having a good time who doesn't know he's floundering.
I have seen our currently favorite host stand behind the singer and sing without a mic just to help the singer get back on key. Doesn't happen that often and I guess she knows the singer, but when she's done it, it seemed appropriate.

Tambourines are cheesy and annoying when trying to sing karaoke.
Unless a host is asked to sing with a customer, they should keep their mic off.
Went out to a show one nite, and the host started singing with me. I gave him a glare and he stopped. Next time I was up, he started again, I said over the mic with 3mins left in the song, "If you want to sing this song, her ya go" and handed him my microphone and went and sat down. He never sang with anyone, including me, the rest of the nite.

Rob Star wrote: I am interested in Karaoke singers NOT hosts opinions of these poll questions You should have posted "(not hosts)" in the title bar, can't see this until after taking the poll. However, I do consider myself a singer and do go to other shows occasionally. I went a show once that the host would sing with you. Didn't ask if it was ok, just sang. I find that just plain $%^&$*# rude!!! I have a tambourine, it's probably 40 years old, in perfect shape and some people like to use it. I don't find it "cheesy" at all! Lots of music acts use a tambourine and it doesn't take a lot of skill to make it sound good. I don't use it while others are singing but I use it when I sing sometimes. I have helped singers out here and there when I see them struggling. Usually it is because they are lagging in the song or not laying out the harmonies right. Usually without a mic and I use discretion when doing this. I've never had anyone get mad at me but again, I use discretion when I see someone struggling. I've had many singers thank me.

ripman8 as you also go and sing on others shows then the poll applies to you too before i became a host i was at karaoke shows 3-4 times a week as a singer ..i was addicted ..still am when i have free time. I have been to many shows and some dress up have props etc thats fine its a bit of fun ..but i did encounter the type of host who would join in when the singer wasn't struggling and just to hear there own voice. I also found the Tambourine type ones ..now i have no problem if the Tambourine is played properly ie in time and at a suitable volume level. but on even quiet songs and out of time i found it like trying to do mental maths while someone was shouting out random numbers in my ear! Its like anything done in moderation and at the right moment and with the singers permission these are just not issues but used incorrectly they can and in my experience do put some people off, I have blow up guitars for long instrumental solo bits on rock songs so some singers can perform a bit , but i dont have them out on every song, and i don't have a tambourine. At my last gig an audience member who does not sing brought in a tambourine ..he is a wannabe drummer ..pity he can't play in time, it was putting off singers so i had to ask him to stop, the singers thanked me. There was one host in my local town who used to sing along and with everyone and who had a Tambourine and people forgot his name and just called him "Mr. Tambourine man" in a derogatory fashion as in oh no Mr Tambourine man is on at the x we will go y instead .. now to be fair he was a good host apart from this.. but i found listening to singers that they did not like it at all and the recent experience at my gig , made me want to know if singers here felt the same.

When i'm a singer, no I absolutely do not want the host to grab a mic & join in nor play any instrument.

I was at a show about a year ago where a guy showed up with a pair of congas thinking he would impress the females by slapping his drums while people were singing. The KJ was dumb enough to let him put them in the stage area. Only after the rotation dried up because nobody wanted to sing under those conditions did the KJ tell him to put them away.

I was at a place last night where there were FOUR! Count 'em, FOUR Damned TAMBOURINES and TWO sets of MARACAS being used constantly throughout the night. It was so friggin' annoying. It actually threw a couple of singers off on their singing due to the bad timing of the tambourine player.

I have only been to a few shows where the KJ had musical instruments (Tamborines included), and it didn't bother me. They didn't use them for every single song, and they did play in time with the music and Singer (so it was not a disruption to their performances).
As for a KJ singing along with me, I do not appreciate them just jumping in without some sort of consent from me first. There are some songs (on the serious side) that I sing, where I do NOT want a 2nd voice joining in at all. When I am doing my lighter stuff, I don't mind... BUT, give me some kind of notice that you want to, and wait for a nod of acknowledgement from me.

1 of the places I hit the KJ will occassionally use a tamborine. But they have the beat down and dont over do it. I think it's more of an attempt of trying to get the crowd more into it. They'll also do background. But this too appears to be with prior consent as alot of the singers here sing the same old songs. Since the KJ has a clue, I don't think it bothers anyone. The places I go all are friends thru the pub so this stuff doesn't really seen to bother us. The drunken idiot wanting to join in does bother me, but I take it in stride. I'm there to have fun and you never know when the "wow" factor comes in and you're thinking that was pretty good sounding. Now at the same time, I don't think I've ever experience a KJ joining in at a new place. I can see that possibly bothering me not knowing them.

I can just see Bruce trying to sing Tenth Avenue Freezeout and he gets to the line in the song "Turn around the corner things got real quiet real fast" and all those tambourines and maracas are clanging away. Real *clang* quiet *shake-shake*...not quite.

I always have a tamborine and a full set of harmonicas. The taborine is out although I don't advertise it. I use it maybe once a show. I use the harmonica sometimes once, sometimes a bit more and ONLY use the instruments during my singing.

Love the harmonica!
Not a big fan of it really at karaoke with the singers though. It seems like open mic night to me then. I don't think it would bother me as much with the KJ.
Rip, I know you go to other gigs for singing you say. Do you use it then? Or only when you KJ? Just curious.

Besides, no shows around here that are worth a darn in my opinion. Last show I went to was in Houston, well take that back, one local place but the audio hurt my ears so much from the loudness and poor quality that I walked out as soon as I finished my beer.

The largest part of my karaoke "experience" is from San Diego. There are several hosts who "include" instrumentation to their shows. Personally, I'm basically against it. I just waited an hour or more to sing my song... to have to share it with someone who doesn't know the song, and is "faking" it. The dynamics, the dramatic pauses... nothing works.. On the other hand... There are a couple who keep it "available" and if you request or "give them the nod", they join in. That can be fun.. But singing "background".. no thank you.. the track I've chosen HAS the background I've practiced with and am used to. I know it's selfish of me... But it's MY turn to shine.. or falter. On my own, thank you. YES... "I Did It, My Way"... Thank you.

I think it can be fun if a tambourine/harmonica/stuff is there and available to use, if a singer (or group) wants to..... but I do not think a host should do AnYtHiNg without prior consent of the singer..... including jumping in on backup.
That's tacky:/

That's tacky:/ Exactly! Agree 100%. Only thing is, I will share my tambourine but not one of my harmonicas, for my lips only! My tambourine is always there.
