Post subject:  Abou that..

Last night my boyfriend participated in a local competition that voted for the winner by having the singers vote for eachother. The flaw in this is if you bring a bunch of non singing friends to compete in order to vote for you you WILL win. That's exactly what happened, one girl sang "Get the Party Started" by pink and she sang it completely flat and you know that's not a song to showcase your talent and range. Only 6 people competed and the two that lost got the most applause and were the best singers according to all the audience members who came up to them after their performance. The four who won, all came together, sat together and were friends. The two who didn't make it came with only one or two people who didn't compete therefore couldn't vote. What kind of contest lets you win even if you suck because you brought friends who competed only to vote for you?

Please tell me what you think, I've enclosed a link to a raw uncut, unprocessed recording of my boyfriend.

I appreciate your comments. With all due respect...unless you have all 6 recordings, it would be hard to determine who was the best. And unfortunately, girlfriends always think their boyfriends are the best singers...conversationalists...etc. That is why he is your boyfriend!

That group of people you speak of at one table was a total of 2 participants???? Based on voting that is a total of one vote support if they voted for each other. Hardly a determining factor in this contest.

What we have done is give all singers 6 opportunities in each category to make it to the semifinals at a club(s). And 24 chances overall in all categories.

My suggestion is to SUPPORT your boyfriend WIN or LOSE and everything will come out all right in the end. Putting down other performances is neither positive or supportive generally and it demeans the hard efforts of what your boyfriend may accomlish in the future.

Good luck in your endeavors!

Post subject:  Thank you for your response

If the other recording are posted I will post them. Also I understand that you may think that my opinion is biased which is why I posted what the audience reaction was. In fact one patron told him that he was the best singer tonight and he was leaving with a trophy

"That group of people you speak of at one table was a total of 2 participants???? "
This is incorect there were four contestants at this table who were friends, that is three votes per person. So it WAS a determining factor.

It is unfair to think if we bring 30 friends who "compete" that we would win, I think that having judges who have music backgrounds would be more fair.

"My suggestion is to SUPPORT your boyfriend WIN or LOSE and everything will come out all right in the end"

I AM supporting him, however it is difficult to understand why it seems that people who know the process don't allow people, who don't come in large groups or aren't locals to pass through if they deserve it.

I also think that the other girl who was cut deserved to move on, she had an amazing voice as well.

I understand you can't judge the voices without recording, but I think your voting system has a flaw that people are manaipulating in order to win. That is unfair and that is my point.

Okay, I have seen your post around here about 20 times in different threads.

But, you have to get over it. Nothing in the music business is fair. I know people who have vocal ability that you would not believe. I know people that are just as good as Kelly Clarkson, and should be the ones recording instead of her.

It is about being in the right place at the right time. What do you win at this karaoke contest? Money? A trophy? If that is all then what is the big deal. So what some horrible singer took the trophy home. Not the end of the world.

Any type of singing contest is unfair. Perhaps they don't like your name, or what you are wearing, or the color of your hair. Singing nowdays has nothing to do with vocal abiltiy. Have you ever heard Avril Lavinge sing live? She can't sing to save her life. Why is she so popular? Because she sings well written catchy songs, and is markatable with her look. NOTHING TO DO WITH VOCAL TALENT! She is a horrible horrible singer. But, she would win any contest hands down. Why, because she can perform.

If it is so unfair, next time, call 100 of your friends and have them with you.

And, if you are saying that I am just being mean, I have entered over 10 contests in the last year. I have yet to win one, and yet to lose one to a good singer. I have also yet to get mad about losing, why? What is the point in getting angry over something you can't control.

I sing for me. Not for glory, not for fame, for me. I love to sing, and that is why I enter contests in the first place. To make myself a better singer, and to show my talent that I am very proud of. The winning is second.

Post subject:  Thanks ritisroo

Hehe your post made me smile, I understand what you are saying but I still wanted to voice my opinion.

I think it is unfair that the music industry is in such a state that we have people like Britney, Avril and J-Lo setting the standard for what is Talent.

I appreciate your comment and I hope that you also get to enter a contest where you can either win or know that you lost to someone with better talent.
