Post subject:  Hawaiian Theme Party Ideas

I just booked an informal Hawaiian-themed wedding reception. Basically a DJ only event (there might be a couple of guests that sing something for the bride and groom, but I know they don't want the books passed out and have it turn into a karaoke party). Need to incorporate some games/contests which is generally not a problem, but I'd like to include some that are "island oriented" if possible. Expect it to be an older crowd than typical for weddings - 30s-50s. They've asked for a lot of Buffett, Marley and the like and I'd like to tailor some of the games to the theme if possible. The game/party sites I refer to didn't really have anything that seemed to fit the bill. Appreciate any ideas!

Load up on some cecilio and kapona tunes they will go over quite well. There are also numerous island compilation disks at tower or virgin records store.......

Make sure to ask about what you should wear. I over dressed for my Hawaiian gig last month and it was tough to dress down with what I had on without looking like a slob.

Also have some traditional Hawaiian music going while people are gathering and signing the guest book.

As far as games, they didn't mention that so we didn't do any. However, toward the end of the reception, the bride changed her mind and did ask if I wouldn't mind letting a few of the guests sing karaoke for awhile, even though she said before that I would be strictly DJ'ing. So be ready just in case. Also, have some kid friendly discs ready. The little ones were the life of the party. Good luck. It'll go great.

I don't think you would ever be overdressed for a hawaiian theme party with a pair of white pants and an aloha shirt. That comes from living in Hawaii for 13 years.

Thanks all. Music will not be an issue - this will be essentially a DJ gig (with a little karaoke from particular guests) and I have everything necessary, including the novelty stuff: Hawaii 5-0, Gilligan's Island, Don Ho, etc. Got some great, what I call "psychodelic surf" music to play in addition the standard fare of the Ventures, Jan & Dean, Beach Boys... (check out the Insect Surfers if you like this sort of thing - old acquaintences and absolutely awesome).

For more normal dance time, it will be mostly 70s/80s routine with some of the traditional group stuff like Cha-Cha Slide, Electric Slide, and a bit of the bar/country hits (localize perhaps).

I plan to do the hula/limbo routines as well. Will still keep searching for a few other things to involve everyone; coconuts seem promising! Will be a fun party, I'm sure. No tux - Hawaiian shirt absolutely!
