Most of my older foundation is made up of Pioneer laser discs. I have one that was dropped, and it's got about a 1" by 1" chip on one side of the disc. Without thinking, I threw a song from the other side of the disc in, and it played fine. I'm wondering, would I risk damaging the player by playing a disc that is obviously out of balance weight-wise? Thanks kindly. |

Wouldn't worry TOO much about it - unless it is a song that is a major requestor every night. I have 2 chipped discs. 1 actually lost 4 songs (2 per side), the other plays all songs fine. These have been that way for the last 4 years - my #44 disc gets played all the time come to think of it, never had any problems with the players. |

the laser doesn't touch the disc, like a stylist on a phonograph. Having damaged (chipped or scratched) discs is not a big deal... BUT I would play the song that damage is on, just so you know for a fact it's gone! Do that on your own time... don't disappoint a customer by playing it, and having it skip or malfunction, and then they're disappointed! |

My concern is that disc will wobble, much like when your tires are out of balance. Since the chip is on the outer edge, is that the first song or last song? |

Just like a cd, the disc starts inside & reads outward. So check the last couple tracks. For a chip that big, you may have lost 2 or 3 songs per side. As far as the possible wobble, it's possible & if it's sever enough, it could do damage over time. Try it out while feeling the machine. Then compare the vibrations to a non-damaged disc. If there is a noticeable difference, figure out a way to transfer the laser to another format & consider it dead - but make sure you keep it to prove you own the original. |
